So I buy a 1906-O dime with some scratches, still VF or something (don't remember) so it was worth about $20 (I paid a little over $10 though).
Anyway, the guy sends me an AG 1906 as he clearly got me confused with someone else, doesn't respond to any emails until I file a dispute.
Then, to add insult to injury, paypal asks me to provide TRACKING for the item back. I thought 'no way' because tracking is going to cost like half the value of what I paid. They should have just refunded me the difference, as the 1906 was worth $1 tops. Or paid for tracking if it was so darn important.
I contacted paypal about five times, but no response whatsoever.
Finally they just decide it in his favor even though I contacted them again and again.
Bound to happen once in awhile, more good than bad, just annoying.

I gave up on ebay and PayPal about 6 months ago. It was only 1% of the deals (3 total) that I had problems with but the last seller threatened me and that was that.

Dispute the paypal charge with your credit card company if it didn't come out of your paypal balance.

With the forced switchover to PayPal, I have bid adios to ebay. I don't see why I should have to pay an amount above my final bid, and I resent anyone other than the seller making money on my transaction. The other thing, it seems to me, is that dealing with PayPal is nothing more than a big hassle, from stories I've heard.

I've had a few disputes ruled in my favor. It just seems that there's more and more sellers getting pretty sloppy in their dealings.

Shadow: What exactly are they asking you to do when they want you... "to provide TRACKING for the item back"? Are they asking for you to provide proof that you sent it back and that the original sender has received it?

Yeah, they wanted me to provide a tracking number to send the wrong item back. I just went 'no way' because the wrong item was worth $1 and the original item $10, so I didn't want to pay a bunch of money to send it back w/tracking. They should have had the seller pay it.

Exactly and you should tell them that but it probably wouldn't do any good. They probably want "Signature Confirmation" that costs $2 for a $1 coin!

The same thing happened to me not too long ago. I bid on a mis-listed 10 Kopek and won it for a buck plus shipping. One of those "actual coin pictured" deals. The seller sent a coin with spot of corrosion that was obviously not on the coin pictured. It's not enough to get me away from ebay though. The money that I've saved in good deals far outweighs the few bad experiences.

I liked it better in the old days of ebay where you could give the seller a negative if he turned out to be a total jerk like Shadow's seller. I had a REMOTELY similar experience one time that had a much happier ending for ME. I bid on a low grade 1913-S T2 Buffalo nickel and won it. The seller messed up and sent me a low grade 1913-S T1, instead, which isn't worth as much as the T2. I looked back through his just completed sales and found the T1, properly listed - so I KNEW that he messed up and switched them when he sent them out. I got in contact with him and told him what had happened. He was sceptical, but told me that if the nickel I sent back was the T1 he'd refund my money. As soon as he received the nickel he emailed me to apologize and said he would be refunding the money. I asked him if it was possible to get the T2 back from the other buyer and he told me no, that buyer claims he got the T1 he bid on! My seller knew the guy was a lying so-and-so, but there was nothing he could do at this point. I didn't get the coin I wanted, but the seller kept me whole on ALL my costs, including shipping. Too bad it can't always be that way.

It's the buyer that threatens you with negative feedback if you don't refund some money.... It's the buyer that deliberately writes you a bad check.... It's the buyer that does a chargeback through his CC and gets his money refunded and gets to keep the item.... It's the buyer that does a PP chargeback, then sends you a empty box with Delivery Confirmation and gets his money refunded and gets to keep the item........ ...that you can't leave a negative for anymore...

Excellent example illustrating why I never "did" PayPal and eventually gave up on ebay, in spite of the excellent dealers I've bought coins from

Scubu - you're right...and now I'm not sure why I even made that comment. I just got back from a vacation in the Rockies and I think the altitude altered my brain! Here's the really ironic thing: 95% or more of my transactions on ebay are as a seller, so I should not have needed you to straighten me out on this. You know how a lot of programs have spell check? CCF needs to build in a "Dumb Comment Check" so I can't say things like that anymore. Sorry everybody!

Once the matter is with Paypal, there is only black or white. There is NO common sense. NONE !! simply because they have NO idea. These experts sit either in India, Hungary or somewhere in Africa... and they handle your issues..... Had a great experience with a german seller on ebay. won an auction for 1891 1 cent SL SD canadian. He also had another which was LL LD. the value difference is about 5 fold in favor of the first. I had a uneasy feeling when I paid him.. it said: they do not know the Varieties... should have bought both. Sure enough I received the wrong coin. I called him and explained. He just sent the first coin to whoever had paid first. HOWEVER, he asked me to send it back and he would tray in the meantime to get the other coin back. so he did and sent it to me. Even offered to pay for all my expenses... NOW, that is service! and that all without ebay-Paypal involvement.would have been a nightmare That is how it should be. Seller in Germany is called Muenzenhadi
