Hi,

I was wandering if these coins are infected, I have a collection of Philippine Culion Leper Colony coins, these coins were minted for the purpose of not infecting the rest of the population by using their own minted coins.

I don't know, Littleton sells them.
My Grandmother used to yell at us kids when we put money in our mouth.
She would hollar and say "Take that out of your mouth, you don't know where that has been!"
I don't do that anymore. Maybe a dip in acetone will ease your mind.

I wouldn't think so, I've never heard of anyone catching any type of sickness from handling coins. Though if your concerned dip then in alcohol and then rinse them in distilled water.

If I remember correctly, leprosy can only be caught after living with a leper for a couple of decades.
I wouldn't worry about it. I wouldn't touch them either. Just my opinion.

They should not harm you. However you should also read this article on the World Health Organizations web site about leprosy.

I'm not really worried about it. I had may coins for so many years now and usually the coin goes directly to to its holes in the album.

Okay, you get Goverment warnings like "wear a face mask" or "stay away from crowds" etc but I've NEVER heard of "don't handle the coins from Mexico" (swine flu) or Singapore (SARS) or China (pneumonic plague). The coins for leper colonies were issued through ignorance. And what would the general population do with so called infected coins? "Goverment Health Warning -- wear gloves when shopping and boil your coins when you get home"? Although there once was a bus driver in my home town who did wear gloves to handle money but that was down to a personal skin problem.
Well that's my (unsterilized) twopennyworth.

Maybe he was a coin collector, just in case he finds an interesting coin from the bus riders.

The PC term for leprosy is Hansen's Disease and it is a curable disease. Considering these coins haven't been touched by a leper in decades, I doubt there is any risk. Besides, coins are not really a good vector for bacteria.

As far as swine flu (or any flu) and coins are concerned, simply wash your hands after handling the coins. Even if there are viral particles on a coin, you still have to introduce them to a mucus membrane to contract the disease.
