This is a local story and my bank.
Bay City Times:
"GRAYLING -- A Frederic teen was jailed after trying to cash in an allegedly stolen coin worth $4,500.
Staff at Fifth Third bank in Grayling became suspicious when the 19-year-old tried to redeem the $20 gold piece for $20 on Aug. 24, said Sheriff Kirk A. Wakefield.
Bank employees called police after an Internet search revealed the true value of the 1890 coin, Wakefield said.
The coins allegedly were stolen from a safe that a relative of the suspect kept in the garage of his Frederic Township home, the sheriff said.
District Judge Monte J. Burmeister has arraigned Dustin J. Gohn on one count of larceny from a building.
Gohn is free on $500 cash or surety bond awaiting a 2 p.m. Tuesday preliminary hearing.
"Due to the honesty of the bank employees and quick investigation by deputies, the coins will be returned to the owner," Wakefield said."

He should be made to wear a sandwich board in public, lettered "I tried to sell a $4500 gold coin for $20!"

I dont get why someone would keep a safe with those kinds of valuables in the garage? My safes are inside the actual house, very near my two guns. :P

What are these people thinking? If it was stolen from me, and someone tried to pass it off for 20 bucks, I'd be insulted!

Some people are just not to bright, Also, some people have very LARGE safes and to keep "them" in the house is just not practical, some people have 2-story homes and, lets say their office is on the second level, sometimes it is just not that easy to place a 5-6 hundred pound safe in that room, so for all intents and purposes, they place the safe in their garage, it takes ALL kinds, give the guy a break, IMO, his mistake was leaving the safe open or letting too many people know the combination.......

https://goccf.com/t/52630 This topic was being discussed here! I think the guy was pretty much an idiot for taking it to the bank, and the teller....well, she had to go online to find out a big hunk of gold was worth more than $20.00?

Quote: just being honest I would have gaven the kid 20 bucks and tooken the coin...put thats just me funny how there is a double standard with some collectors, if a dealer would do that he would be the scum of the earth but a collector thinks if they do it they are the king of the world. In my opinion they are both in the same category....I will let you chose which one they belong in. I would understand if the coin happened to be in a bag or container and you didn't know it was in there, you were just buying the lot of coins to search through (even then I would try to find who sold the lot to me and let them know what was in there and if I couldn't afford to give them a decent price for it I would offer to sell it and split the money with them). If you gave them what they were asking for the lot (or even talked them them down a little) and you didn't know what the lot was actually worth and neither did the seller and both were satisfied with the deal. Then you go home and search and find the coin. But to know what it is and then just give face value is just wrong in my opinion. I really hope who ever gets my collection doesn't run into a collector that would do this to them just because the collector thinks he is all knowing and can rip off someone. Just think if the coin was stolen from you and you paid $4000.00 for it, would you want someone to give the person who stole the coin 20 bucks for it and keep it for themselves or call the police and investigate the situation so you could get your stolen property back? You should really treat others as you want to be treated and if you don't sooner or later you will end up paying for it in the future so no matter how much you think you got a great deal it will cost you more than if you actually paid what it was worth in the end somewhere else in life.

Seriously, I would have given the kid $20 for it, and called the cops on the kid, then I would get my $20 back either from the kid or the original owner who would reward me, and would have been able to say I owned a gold double eagle, albeit briefly. Also, it would prevent the kid from just spending it somewhere else if I did not pay him for the coin.

Next time I'm in the bank I am going to ask the teller that next time someone brings in coins like that to call me first. Quote: Must be a Yooper... No, not that far North, close though...

Quote: Doing that would have been just as wrong as your english Oh, SNAP! My Two Cents: As much as I would love to have that coin, there's no way I could do that to the guy who sweated and slaved for the cash to buy the coin in the first place. (I SURELY would not want anyone to do it to me!)

With Moe, I work hard to save the money to invest in my collection. I certainly wouldn't want a collector to get it for $20 any more than I would want someone to steal it. I might would buy it off the kid to see if I could find the proper owner... but I don't agree with buying a $4,000 coin for $20 just because the coin is hot and the thieves are idiots.
