thanks again guys. on to the also, . . this morning I came across an 84' with several on the steps of the monument. Ill get picts up by morning.

presumbably: 'feeder fingers' are leaving these gouges.

The feeder fingers gouged out the area in question on the die, making it raised. Still a gouge, it happens to some dies.

Im with Chuck on this. It IS a gouge. What it mean is there was a gouge on the die itself so YES,the gouge, when struck, will be raised like it is. Gouge

Feeder fingers are part of the machinery that feeds the blank planchets into the die press and sometimes the fingers get pressed between the dies.
