Hope I did ok, I already purchased it. Just need your info on the condition. Thanks. Would it be worth having this coin slabbed?

That's an odd one. Looks like a really worn obverse die paired with a pretty fresh reverse one. The pics are small, so the details it takes to differentiate from AU-MS aren't there. If MS, it'll probably go strong 63, likely 64. If not, and the reverse shows wear I don't see, call it AU53-55.
Rest in Peace

Dave, I agree on the quality of the obverse strike - it's pretty weak, but I don't see any obvious signs of circulation other than the weak hair above Liberty's ear; no marks on the fields to speak of. However, that rim ding at 7 o'clock and the lesser dings above and below the big one are gonna knock it way down if it's Mint State. '96 Morgans in Mint State are relatively common, so any mark is gonna count heavily against it. MS-61 or -62, presuming a grader doesn't see circulation signs with the coin in hand.

I was and I am, off and on. I'm now at a Forest Service campground near Prescott, AZ, but I time out (2 weeks max at FS campgrounds) in 9 days. Meantime, I'm driving around looking for a cheap long-term site, but am finding none nearby, so am expanding my area of operations. When I get a breather, I check into the forum starting with subscription topics. With my backlog of forum subscription emails, it's real easy to have a couple three hours pass without noticing. I love this forum, so if and when I get a break, I check in to see what's going on. And, of course, there's always a Morgan topic somewhere. Buy, some days, I won't be able to get online at all.

When did you get the CIB?

Economically, probably not. In MS63 it's about a $50 coin.

There you are! Hi, Rick! In what little time I had last time, I tried tracking you down through your profile, but you were too far up on the postings. I had figured we'd cross paths sooner or later, however... and here you are!

Thanks for the offer of NM, but with VA appts now every two weeks (they're looking for something to fix which ain't broken), I gotta stick close to Prescott. I had considered northern NM for awhile - a friend is Superintendent of Pecos Natl Historical Park and Ft. Union NH Site, but I added up the travel distance and it was just too far to Prescott.

ScoutJim, besides the CIB, I'm curious about the "Scout" part of your username since I'm VERY active in Boy Scouting. NC is a beautiful state and I thank you for the offer. I love the Cape Hatteras and Outer Banks area, have been there numerous times. Trouble is that with gas prices as they are now, I'll be lucky to ever leave Aridzoney again! Command post? I *AM* a portable Command Post! With my ham radio license and all my radio gear in my travel trailer/home (7 rigs, 12+ antennas, redundant support gear (power alone: 3 generators + solar), a dozen modes including considerable digital data and HF email [Winlink 2000 = SailMail] along with portable satellite internet together with my emergency communications and Signal Corps training and experiences (2 wars, 9/11, Katrina, a tornado, and a few lesser hurricanes), I'm geared up to handle command (ICS) communications at least at Brigade level. I'm on the on-call list at ham radio HQ (ARRL in CT), can respond with 12 hours notice or less, depending upon my situation of the instant, but I'm getting too old to be driving 1700 miles in 2 1/2 days like I did last Sept.

Back on topic, those rim dings on the '96 are gonna cost in MS grade. I don't think they're severe enough for a bodybag, but the TPGs are gonna take notice and keep its MS grade at the lower end. Too bad since it's otherwise a really, really nice Morgan, especially the reverse which, if graded from the image alone and only from the reverse would put it into the MS-68 level. I can't see a single bag mark or tiny scratch on it. Gets one to wondering how a 110-year old coin can survive in such good shape, rim dings ignored.
