Is this coin Unique? I am starting to lean that way! A lot of us dabble around looking for errors be it via coin rolls, cherry picking from boxes of coins, or VAMs. I was at the National Gun Show this weekend and there were several gun dealers whom had "old coins". I happened upon this coin. I went back and forth for about 5 times in a 3 hour period. I had to make a decision...buy a coin or buy the pistol I have been wanting for some time now. Well as you can guess the coin won. I figured it was rare and not having any reference material to go by, I shot three different offers at the guy and he finally accepted my final offer right before I was going to walk out the door. After talking to a few coin people, it appears that I may have something that UNIQUE, being that this coin is a Proof error, Civil War era, a mintage of only 500 for the year (how many still exist?), and it's a certified DOUBLE STRUCK coin! The double striking is very evident on the right hand side of the coin on the obverse and on the bottom left on the reverse. It almost appears that it was going to be an off-center proof and they stopped before stamping it fully and realigned it struck it into it's cameo appearance with the first strike still present! I wonder if this is one of the older proof error coins out there? I had bought Mike Byer's book "World's Greatest Mint Errors" and in the Proof Errors section there are several double/multiple struck coins but no 3 Cent Silvers listed at all. I can't find anything about another 3 cent silver proof error like it anywhere. Has anyone else have any information about this oddity and maybe an estimated value as an error? Byer's book has a 3 cent Nickel in ANACS PR64 double struck (just like mine) and labeled as unique with a price tag of $7500! I took several photos of each side and at different lighting angles. It is really a beautiful coin! At the recommendation of Bruce, I think I am going to be sending it in to PCGS. Warning Large "Prethen" Sized Photos, if they don't load all the way right click the red X and choose "Show Picture"! The black is shadow on the photo below, the toning is consistant around the whole coin. Edited by Nelrak 09/29/2009 10:29 pm

O! MY! HOLY COW!! That has got to be the most beautiful 3 cent silver I have seen! Besides the fact that it may be unique, it is a jaw dropper in the eye appeal department! And your photography is terrific on this one! Three thumbs up! I think ANACS may have forgotten a cameo designation, as it sure looks it to me?

Whoa, what a spectacular coin! You were in the right place, and the right time, and made the right decision. I'd bet it is "unique" in that there probably aren't any other proof 3-cent silvers out there with a similar error. I couldn't guess what the "error premium" should be for this coin, but it's a winner regardless.
Congrats!

No need to resubmit. That coin's merits are so obvious it could be in an NNC slab and still be spectacular. Were I you, I'd be contacting Mike Byers about it, simply because Mike is probably the guy most able to comment on its' rarity in the grand scheme of things.
Wowser. That's huge, man.

Wow! That Coin is a beauty! Since I am a Fan of Trimes, This one is one of the best I've seen, with very rich toning and luster, and with the Double Struck Feature. A Fantastic Coin!

Well I contacted Mike Byers and he believes there are 2 other Proof 3 cent Silver errors out there, one being a double struck obverse pattern coin from 1869. He estimated the value of my coin between $5000 and $10000! Needless to say I am pretty happy with my purchase! *Corrected original post from my typo of Nickel instead of silver. :)

I believe you made the right decision between the coin and the gun. That is a beautiful coin and even though I don't study this series (mainly because I can't see the little boogers very well) but if I had seen this coin myself and had the funds to purchase it (which probably wouldn't have happened) it would have had to come home with me. I don't know who is on your list to receive your coins if something was to happen to you but from what I have seen you post over the years on this forum they are going to have a very nice collection that would probably attract allot of attention. Have you ever thought of sending all your coins in to have a pedigree added to the label?
