Not from that picture or running a sample through a mass spec.

Have you weighed it? If the weight is very different from a standard quarter, it could have accidentally been made on a dollar coin planchet maybe, though I have never heard of one of those. Otherwise, someone probably electroplated it either gold or brass and the coin is worth about $0.25

More than likely, it has been gold plated. There are many gold, silver, and platinum plated State Quarter floating around- typically purchased from marketing companies for inflated prices. Once the owner finds out their "sure fire investment" is only worth 25 cents, they usually end up in circulation. However, if the weight deviates from the standard 5.67 grams, then you might have something...

weigh another quarter on your wifes scale and see what kind of weight you get on it (sort of an accuracy test). Does it look noticeably bigger or thicker than a regular quarter? Sacagawea dollars weigh 8.1 grams! Can we get better pics?

I thought you said it weighed about 8 grams? That's almost 2.5 grams more than a regular quarter! Or is your wifes scale not very accurate? If it weighs within .1 of a gram if a regular quarter it's probably plated.

It's definitely gold plated. There are a LOT of Statehood Quarters that are silver, gold, and platinum plated. The late-night "collector" shows used to sell them like hotcakes to unsuspecting suckers. Many have since been spent.

It can't be struck on a dollar planchet. The dollar planchet being larger in diameter can't feed through the planchet feeding tubes, can't be handled by th fed fingers, and won't fit in the coining chamber. Even if it was put between the dies by hand it would be a broadstrike with no reeded edge, marks from the edge of the collar on one side, and larger in diameter than a regular dollar coin.

I have seen these offered in all three metals mentioned above on one of those coin shows late at night talking about how collectible they are since these are coated with precious metals. I guess what you have is someone had a set of these and maybe took it to a coin dealer and found out they are worth face value so they took the set apart and spent them for what they are worth
