We had our annual coin show Friday-today, so of course I bought some coins for my 7070. One of which is my very first large cent. But when I put it into it's slot, the coin is smaller in diameter than the hole. This is a 1828 by the way. It's really not a big problem, except it gets turned sideways easilly, and I'm very picky about the coins facing straight up and down on both sides of the page. So...has anyone else had this problem? I read in the Red Book that the diameter of the Liberty Head lg cents (1816-1857) were "28-29 mm" So I guess they cut the Dansco hole for 29mm, and I have a 28mm. Anyway, I'm just wondering if anyone else has seen this, and how I might go about "filling" the extra space so that the coin doesn't slide/turn in the slot. Thanks!

How about a thin strip of archival safe material, like maybe cutting a flip into a strip thin enough to fit between the slides (and surround the coin)!

I thought about that, but it might be distracting using a white flip. I could cut off the edge of my least favorite Dansco! :) Maybe I will try some things tomorrow. Thanks.

Not a white cardboard 2X2, a mylar (plastic) flip

Oooooooooooohhhhh. Ok, so you're saying put it over/around the surface of the coin. That makes sense. That would probably be easier than cutting a strip to go around the diameter of the coin.....
I have school and work tomorrow, so I'm going to bed. But I'll try it tomorrow and see how it works. Thanks ratman!

I made shims out of the 2x2 flip also for the coins that are to small for the holes on my 7070 as well. I asked them why the holes were so big on some of these things and they replied saying the cons werent all the same size so one may fit correctly where another one would be a little small. If I am not mistaken they used to offer shims for this very reason but I don't know if they still do or not

You really only need a couple of small shims at the top and bottom. They don't need to go all the way around the coin. If you can find something roughly the same color as the Dansco, you can barely see them.

I tried ratman's idea, I think. I cut two squares out of a plastic flip, larger than the hole, slid them in (one on each side) putting the coin in between them. Then came the frustrating part: getting the slides back in (over the cut outs) and without moving the cutouts over to the next hole. Finally, I got them in and..... the coin is still a little loose, although not nearly as much as before. So I think this will work for now, but if the coin starts rotating again, then I may have to try shims of some sort.
Thanks for the help everyone! I'll see if I can get a pic up here in a minute.

Bryan, I bought this 7070 brand new in the wrapper, and it did not come with shims. Here are a couple of pics: Perhaps I should get a different lg cent for this slot One of the 29mm variety. Does anyone know, by any chance, which years are 28mm and which are 29mm?

It doesn't work that way. The reason for the variable diameter is because the large cents were not struck in a collar until 1837. Since there was nothing to contain the edges of a coin as it was struck, the diameter was a function of striking pressure.

Aha! Thank you Biokemist. That is good to know. Adds a little history to the set, IMO.

Like I said I may be wrong here I am just trying to go from memory. I just cut up some plastic flips for the coins that were smaller than the holes but I did wrap them all the way around the coin. This probably will not be the only coin you have this problem with either, I remember doing it for a few coins in mine and I think one of them was the 2.5 dollar gold indian
