I have two volunteer (rev.) dimes that both show a similar
pattern of multiple die cracks running vertically from
below "Elizabeth II" (obv.) to the edge of the coin. They are all straight lines. It seemed odd. Is this normal for this yr. coin ?
Thanks

I had forgot about this post. Think I need to try and get some pics.
I read somewhere then saw the same phenom on this coin but it also
had a visible clash. No clash evident on my two dimes. Also shows a small tail on the reverse at the top end of the ribbon and also on the date (off of the 1 cross bar)

I have a couple of these volunteer dimes, but they all seem perfectly fine to me, so I wouldn't think it was normal. Common? I have no idea.

Both dimes have the same vertical lines under elizabeth.
The tail on this one is the lower right side of the 1 in the date.
Pic. is not great but these lines look odd. So straight.

I've seen these marks before on recent Canadian coins, and it's been discussed here a few times.
People here suspect it's due to Die Deterioration, where perhaps the outer plating of the die is worn away over time.
This might explain why these marks move radially away from the devices towards the rim.
From what I know of die trails, those are usually angled in the same direction.

Just a thought. There are no beads or denticles around the rim(obverse or reverse)Maybe this caused a problem in minting?
These dimes are quite common! after saving a few rolls I decided to cash them in at the bank.(Kept 2 for my collection)BUT I find trying to get a NON-ERROR is quite challenging.I only have a couple myself.Any one else have other ideas?

I've come across 2 of those volunteer dimes with the trails. The 2nd one I got yesterday. I've googled and read something about the mint had a dies problem causing bleeds. I've received quite a few of these dimes in change but only ever saw the "bleeds" on 2 of them. Attached is a photo I scanned, image not clear quality but clear enough to clearly see the smudge lines of those leaks. They're VERY obvious on the coin!

OK, this dime is a bee in my bonnet. I've done lots of googling to find out more about it, but there's not much mention at all regards the error of the bleeds.

Wiki says ... " 2001: A small number of volunteer coins were accidentally issued with a die break error, causing the lettering to bleed into the reeded edge of the coin."

My "die bleeds" 2001 P dime is non-magnetic. One site gave info that its supposed to be plated steel (therefore magnetic?)

They did also have a Sterling Silver collectors 2001 Volunteers dime, so no P and not plated. My dime is definately plated and not like sterling at all. Too high shiny to be sterling.

So my questions are:

1) Shouldn't my P (plated) dime be magnetic if they were plated steel? Or is my dime on a wrong planchet that was supposed to be steel but isn't?

2) How many of these die break bleeds dimes were actually accidentally released?

3) If this is an error coin, an obvious mint error, and so few released which makes them scarce, why aren't they being mentioned and sought after in error coin sites?

Does anyone one have any answers for me please? :)

It's not perfect, but if you go via Google Translate you can get a gist of the conversation: http://translate.google.com/transla...=fr&tl=en&u=http://numicanada.com/forum/viewtopic.php%3Ff=24&t=1144&start=0
