So, I have been in the market for a circulated 1916-d Mercury dime to complete my merc dime set. I will probably go for an AG-3 or a G-4 by one of the top 3 TPGs. However, this calls for careful attention because, at least in my opinion, the majority of these coins are overgraded. There are a lot of Fr-2's in AG-3 slabs; and a lot of AG-3s in G-4 slabs; at least in my opinion. Anyways, there is one that I am looking at that I consider to be correctly graded at AG-3. I'm going to post it along with 4 other 16-ds that are in G-4 slabs, to gather some additional opinions from you all on board. In my opinion, all of the posted 16-ds are AG-3s technically, but 4 of the 5 are graded G-4. Which one do you think is the AG-3 based on these photos?(no cheating). Also, which coin would you prefer to have in order from highest to lowest based on these photos?

I agree, they seem to all have AG-3 wear. The TPGs were generous on those 4 (and I am sure the owners are wanting G-4 prices for them). I will say that Coin #3 was the one graded AG-3, but feel it is more attractive than some of the others.

In order I would choose
#1 (first choice)
#3
#5
#4
#2 (last choice)

I am interested in seeing the results and which one you choose.

From first pick to last pick and reasons why in MY opinion.

#4 Would probably try as a pocket piece to see about evening it out to enjoy it.
#1 Second choice, Maybe even a wash for 1 and 4. Hard choice
#5 Looks more washed out but could be the pictures.
#3 worn almost flat obverse but if looking at as a whole coin not the worst IMO.
#2 Just don't like rim dings and JMO ugly coin, perhaps if it too was a pocket piece for a few weeks it might even itself out and be enjoyable. But I sure don't like the way it sits as is. Might wear itself into a nice ocin but given the pricetags I don't think I would chase it onto a limb to find out.

Picking out the AG..If I had to say one it would be #3 just because of the worn obverse. Not the worst reverse, but obverse has seen some cash registers in its day.

What a great thread, just putting one against the other really shows off how different areas can have such dramatic difference in how much you like one coin over another.

Yes we are all different, but I too am interested in which one you like best, and why. Make sure and share if/when you decide for yourself.

I'm not good at grading so I won't. But I would choose coin #1 to have because it has very good eye appeal to me.

I saw this post last night but it was too late to give it a shot. I think I've reached a conclusion so here goes. In order of first to last -

#1 - picture a bit blurred but it looks like my favorite.
#4 - shadow of holder may hide something better but it' my second pick.
#5 - flat with a lot of reverse wear
#2 - rim jut looks rough and eye appeal is low
#3 - pic is good but coin looks like it's more circulated that the rest.

This would make #3 my pick for the AG3. Would I put money on it? No. Let us know!

They are all AG, but I have to admit I have seen coins in similar condition slabbed (By the major services) as high as VG.

this is a good thread as I'm in the market for a 16D myself and have been looking for some time now but haven't found the right one for the same reasons you stated.

My first pick would be #1 since most of the letters are visible and uniform color.

Next would be #3 & #5

Thank you for the responses. It looks like #1 is a favorite, but it's obvious that the AG-3 coin is hard to pick out in the midst of overgraded G-4s. I will post the result tommorow evening to allow for more comments.

Out of curiosity what's the average price for these? I have a couple of dates I need to complete my Mercury set and of course the 1916D is one of them. I've looked at various online dealers and want to see how their prices compare.

I'm not too sure what the current price is for these. A few years ago I purchased what G-4 which turned out to be a G-6. I paid under $900.00. I think that was back in 2005. I know prices have risen since then.

Coin #4 is the only one in the group graded AG-3. Just from my limited observation of heritage auctions, it appears that NGC is stricter on this key date than PCGS. Especially the newer NGC holders. There are some killer AG-3 mercs and full rim G-4 mercs in NGC holders on heritage. It is amazing to me the spread of quality within one grade. Of course there may be hidden problems that are silently netted when the coin looks strong for the grade, but many of the overgrades are inexcusable imo.....but I guess that is the market.

I just purchased coin #4 and will post some better pics when it arrives. I didn't get a "bargain", an average price for an AG-3, but way outside of a G-4 price.

Congrats! That completes the set, right? That's quite a feat as far as I'm concerned. Someday I hope to do the same!

My choices in order:
1
5 & 2 about tied for 2nd
4
3

Maybe it's the picture or the lighting but #4 looks cleaned to me, but it still looks better than #3 in my eyes.

That may be my fault. I brightened it a tad because the shadow was hiding some of the detail. *this is a good trick when looking at a heavily shadowed coin on ebay to determine the detail*. I posted the ebay link in the last post.
