One of our employees (currently laid off for about 9 months due to the recession.....with only a couple of metal bldgs. to erect in between there to break up the "9 months"), came into my office about a week back and showed me an Army ammo box full of "Junk Silver" coins that he had acquired.
I of course was interested !
With the cash I could come up with then, I purchased all of his 1964 90% Silver Kennedy halves. (there were 19 of them) I offered him 9x face and now know that that was a fair offer for both of us.
Upon seeing that he had some Silver Roosevelts, Walkers, Silver Washington Qtrs., and Franklins (and some Peace & Morgans as well) I was just REALLY interested in buying EVERYTHING he had.....but money is a factor for me right now too.
I knew that he would dump all of these at the nearest coin shop in town upon his nearest available time to do so. So, I pleaded with him to wait awhile and give me a chance.......he did.
A couple of days later, I went through all of his Franklins and Walkers and sorted them by date (i was in a hurry too, because I was busy here at work)....and bought one of each year that he had. (didn't have time to sort mintmarks sadly) ...
I also bought a nice large handful of Rosie's....but didn't have time to even look at the dates ! ....
He only had 1921 Morgans and 1922 Peace dollars.....about 10 of them.....and I didn't purchase any of these.
Last night, I had an old Whitman Silver Rosie album (made in 1980) that my dad gave me a few years back. It only had about 5 or 6 coins in it. Well.....to get to the point....I managed to fill the album except for about 9 or 10 holes ! ....
This spurred me to now want to purchase a Franklin album, a Silver Washington Qtr. album, and a Walking Liberty album !
(which I've always "meant" to get around to.....but now I'm definitely going to !)
Now, through the years, of course, I've bought and acquired what amounts to "junk silver" in the past. Little bits, here & there ya know. Knowing that, in the future, I'd be wanting to do the albums. And now, I'll have to make a trip to the SDB at the bank and see what all I've got. (can't believe it's taken me soooo long !)

His remaining junk silver pile was brought by him to the coin shop yesterday. He sold it to the guy for about $1,500.00 (I got about $300.00 worth or so at 9x face before this tragic event occurred thankfully. Because, after all, ALL coins in this situation should NEVER go to a coin shop...they deserve to be in the hands of a "coin collector" who isn't just lookin' for a resale profit....or someone accumulating and then turning in 100 pound loads of "junk silver" for cash. (not that there's anything wrong with that ! ....
9x face, is also what the "coin shop guy" offered him.......
Now since my "coin purchasing excursions/endeavors" need to be kept at a minimum for quite some time.....I was okay with this, as it will now give me "something to do" this winter !
And I can pick up the "missing holes" at any coin shop fairly cheap too.....so....I'll be really excited to try to complete this. It's nice to have a "mission" !.......It's been awhile for me !
I might even buy a LMC album and start one of those......
I just feel "reinvigorated" now ! .......

(these albums will all likely be "junk silver" albums of low quality coins with zero to no "proofs" or any "high quality" coins contained in them......but this isn't a bad thing though.....I'm sure many of us have these kinds of albums right ?)
(Though I do have a fair amount of Proof/Uncirculated Sets of these coins in my own collection.... I do not have near enough of them to even think about cracking the Sets and "upgrading" any of these future albums, nor the money to purchase them in a more desired condition.) ...... .... So, I'll have to be satisfied with what I'm gonna try to do here)

Sounds like you had fun!

I would not call them junk silver albums. They are yours, so cherish them as such!

Yeah, I agree.....I've always hated that terminology "junk silver" !
It doesn't mean how it sounds !
There's absolutely NOTHING "junk" about anything silver first of all !
And silver that is fashioned into a beautiful coin, but shows some age and character, is NOTHING vulgar and demeaning as such a phrase might suggest !

So, I take back the term I mentioned in trying to complete "junk silver" coin albums !
As if to suggest they'd be "junk" worthless albums.....

I only consider badly mutilated silver coins as "junk silver".

If this holds the guy for a while, you may get a good employee back, as he won't need another job for a while! And you got some nice coins to boot! Double score!

He's on his "third extension" of Obama's Unemployment program which adds additional weeks of unemployment benefits. He's staying with us as long as he can, but isn't' required to "look for work" as of yet, since he's still employed by us, just "temporarily laid off due to lack of work"......he's also the Foreman of our crew !
Today, tomorrow, or in the first of the week, I hope to nail down some of these bids I've been working on........gettin folks to sign a contract for $50,000.00 - $120,000.00 for a new metal bldg. in THIS economy is NOT EASY !
But I'm hopeful !.......
now....making it through all of Winter with bills continuously rolling in here......that's another story ! .....

But, anyway, yeah...... I appreciated him allowing me the opportunity to buy anything I wanted out of this batch before he "went to the Piper" to get his pile of cash.
This will certainly give me something to do this Winter....... I'm so excited to put together these albums now that I have a very nice head start to begin filling the holes !
Of course I wish I were able to be purchasing Proof Franklins or MS Walkers, etc. etc. etc.........but it'll be a LOOOOOOOOONNNNNNG time before I can put the money forth to begin filling THOSE kinds of holes.
