Greetings from Maryland, USA .....

I just passed through 110,000 circulated nickels searched in bank rolls (2750 rolls) .... and am writing to offer my usual 10,000 coin find rate update.

Remember .... I consider a 'find' to be any nickel 1959 and earlier ...

Overall find rate is 1.268% ...... so the 'average' $100 box contains 25.36 finds.

Find Rate for War Silver is 1/3,438 coins (found 32)
Find Rate for Liberty V is 1/110,000 coins(found 1)
Find Rate for Buffalo is 1/10,000 coins (found 11)
Find Rate for 'Key' Jefferson is 1/7,857 coins (found 14)

The overall circulation loss for 1938 to 1959 Jefferson is 81.4%.

Now need 4 coins to complete my Jefferson circulation strike collection ..... 38S, 42S, 43D and 44D

Hope this data is helpful to my fellow nickel roll searchers out there.

David

you would have loved the 4 rolls I picked up monday. One was packed with 64s, the other three were mixed 61 and below with 9 War Nickels mixed in for good measure. The oldest Jefferson was 1939.

It looked like someone turned in their small collection as they were in the old green wrappers.

Davest, nice! Always love those War Nickels and even better when you get a roll full of them.

NS, thanks for the stats, keep it coming.

Question for you nickel guys, Has anyone found the error coin in the modern buffalo? Apparently there is a broken die error where the buffalo appears to have a spear through its middle section? Just curious because I look at each one I get and havent seen one yet.

Here is a thread on that topic.

Speared Bison...fact or fiction?

There are also rotated die errors in the bison nickels. I've never heard of anyone finding anything more than misaligned dies, rotated dies, and speared bisons from that year. I'm sure more serious errors exist, however they are probably rediculously rare.
