Does anyone have a guess at what the mintage of the 1999 LMC Wide AM is? I have found 4 in 18 years. Edited by Coins1371 10/22/2009 4:41 pm

Best we can do, it seems, is infer relative mintages from the number of reported finds. Think of the king, the '55 DDO. I don't even think they know how many of those were minted.

I think I read somewhere that it had been estimated around 300/400 total. I'm not sure if that was the number already found or a guestimate of possible production numbers? I really don't think anyone will be able to actually come up with a valid numbers count, but one thing is certain, it's very, very difficult to find! Congrats on your finding 3 in 10 years, I've been lucky to find only one and there are many collectors that have not found any at all.

I'm not sure where I seen it (I think the Cherry Picker's Guide) but I think the mintage for the '55 DDO is around 20,000 Around 1988 my father found a '55 DDO at a local corner store. When he passed away I received the coin.

Wow ! If the 55DDO mintage is estimated at 20,000 and it has an XF price of $1650 and MS value of $43,500 according to Numi News, why is the 99 WAM worth as little as it is with only about 400 pieces(2% of the 55 DDO estimate)?

I don't know the exact number, but there has to be more than 400. I think I remember a thread where Chuck of coppercoins.com was explaining how many of the WAM's of 1998, 1999 and 2000 there might be, but I don't remember what the thread was called.

Extremely low, I tried multiplying out some percentages for fun.
1999-P Mintage: 5,237,600,000
I guesstimate I've searched 100,000 coins (but not all 1999's) and found just one. So in the general population of circulated cents:
0.001% of the 1999 mintage = 52376 coins
Now, if assume about 5% of my searched coins were 1999's or 1 in 5000:
0.02% of the 1999 mintage = 1,047,520
If you consider that there's been a pretty good number found, even though they are tough, there's probably between 50k and 1 million. Hey I don't know how to guess any better! LOL The sad part with errors and varieties is that there's no way to know the population. We can only estimate.

Quote: I think I read somewhere that it had been estimated around 300/400 total. I think that's WAY too conservative. I have no idea what a mints press speed was in 1999, but it would seem that even one press would knock those out in a minute or less. If that were the case, they must have caught the mistake early.....if that happened, I doubt any coins would have escaped the mint. There was enough produced that they DID escape, so it seems to reason that the number must be higher.

Well, the number certified is probably way less than the number that people have found, which is again way less than the total number.
I'd also guess somewhere between 50k and 500k.

1998 wide = 63
1999 wide = 4
2000 wide = 17
None of these reported, so it may be a great many years before a decent percentage is figured out. If 2000 is the most common, why can't I find them?

Good question. I also wonder whether the 2000 is harder to find than the 98, as I also seem to find more 98's then 2000's. I have no idea as to how many were actually made with respect to the 300 count, that's Ken Potters numbers not mine. I just want to find my second 99 WAM!

Based on my searching, I've found more 98's than 2000's. I'd like to know why the 98 is considered "rarer" than the 2000.

I have to correct my numbers. The mintage for the '55 DDO is between 8,001 and 16,000. I have found 4 1999 LMC Wide AM in 18 years. My count for the 1998 wide = 64 2000 wide = 70 Thank You for all the information

coins1371 - How many total cents do you think you've searched to find those 4 99 WAMs?
