I received this in change and find the coin almost scarry. It's missing a good portion of its nickel plating and almost looks like something began to eat into it around his upper lip. It actually looks lik ehis skin is missing and you can see his skull. How do you think this coin got that way?

The dark parts on the back are toned copper.

Most likely environmental damage. Or blame it on guys like No-Hope, who have this morbid hobby of using a buzz box and digging up these resting peacefully old bodies.

My initial thought was lamination but after blowing up the photo, I have to say post mint damage. George has to stay away from that chewing tobacco!
