I find myself needing proof only issues for my Jefferson Album, and lo and behold I have two proof sets of 1975-83 & 89. Should I crack one of each year open to get the coins for my albums? I already have the Lincoln proofs and I'm sure the Roosevelt Dansco (w/ Proofs) can't be too far behind and probably the others also.

Would I be money ahead to crack em or just buy them in lots?

Well, I think you'd probably be money ahead of you did. From the way it sounds you might eventually need the others in the sets and it would cost more to buy them individually. If you already have duplicate sets and the coins in them look good why not? Stash the others back for the time that you get around to filling those albums, unload the cents if you don't need them (trade them here for coins you need or ebay maybe) and you're good to go.

I say crack them. I do it all the time, mostly for the Kennedy's. Has anyone else noticed, if you add the values of the coins for the 70's and 80's (even most of the 60's) you wind up with a higher value than if you keep the sets intact? Strange but true...

I would do the math ... if you will be using most of the proofs ... then it will be cheaper to either crack open one of your sets .. or buy another proof set just to crack open for your dansco's.

A quick check on ebay shows a 38% premium when sold separately (shipping free only items).
I think I will pick one to crack open to see how that goes. It's not like these are high dollar sets, or will ever be high dollar.

I really don't need two sets of each year, one is plenty for me.

Crack them, take out what you need, then sell the
singles that are left over. Sell them here.

Someone here surely needs some of the others for
their albums. Or save them for your future albums.

OK, I'm going to crack 8 extras I have. I got them out of the bank and I'm ready to go. Some look fairly straight forward (pry apart with a screwdriver) and others may be a challenge. For instance, the 1982 set looks like it needs to be cut open, any suggestions?

The earlier ones are held together better than the newer ones. I think starting in 1992 or so they have been barely sealed, if at all. That said, I have never had to use anything more than a utility knife to open any proof set.

I used a screwdriver on the 1976-79 and a hacksaw on the 1980-83 series. I went pretty well. It was very therapeutic to "free" those coins.

I'd crack it! Particularly if you have more than one mint set of that type.

To crack it:

I've used 2 pliers, one on either end of the slab (well away from the coin), applied just enough presure to crack the slab and then pulled it apart.

Be careful of the shards of plastic that can come from the initial break, don't cut yourself on the sharp plastic and make sure the coin doesn't fall!

(But I agree the Dremel tool is most likely the better option! I'm sure it's MUCH more controlled. I just don't have one.)

I usually crack them by giving them a hard twist, until I hear a crack, then they usually pry open with a thumb nail.
