With the displacement of metal and and unatural color it looks post. Looks like a severe acid bath(s).

hopefully I'm right here in saying this is copper peel.from improper alloy mixture showing up as this 'peeling' as seen by the C and the T of the CENT though I could be wrong.as to brighter areas I could only guess that something was adhered to it like glue or similar substance thus protecting it .or some powerfull stuff 'stripped' it clean years later..

So whatever was glued to it left the design? I wonder what it was? That would make sense as to why it didn't turn brown.

There was some organic material stuck in that spot and someone removed it. I've seen this a hundred times from coins that I've conserved from circulation.

It's glue but Christ has it backwards. Nothing was glued to the coin, the coin was glued to an album. It was customary in the olden days to put cent into an album with a spot of glue to keep it in there.
What you see is dried glue residue left on the coin after it came out of the album.
PS it didn't turn browm because that's where the clue was (i.e. it wasnt exposed to air).

I would agree totally "glue" has a lot to do with this "damage". I would ask from the statement above about "the olden days", just how old is the term olden days mean, I have not heard of this treatment before this post?

My other question is how would glue leave the turkey feather type design that you see in the close up pictures.

Try some acetone on it and see what's left afterwards.

It looks exactly like a moth or other winged insect was glued there!
