What causes the flat lettering like this? The photos really don't show but it's almost a jello mold appearance with a ridge around the letters. The obverse is more pronounced than the reverse.

Or could be flattening during circulation. Zinc planchets are very soft compared to copper planchets. Very harmful to pets and people. Do not swallow them! The body acid can break down the plating quickly and then you have to deal with the zinc bad affects. Best to remove them if possible.

That's an early stage Dryer Coin. I'm not going to explain it all again:-) But it is damage due to contact with many other coins.
