this is a quote response from Charles of "coppercoins" in a recent post.
"Doubled column doubled dies are indeed true hub doubled dies, but they are so plentiful I highly doubt they will ever receive any notable attention, interest, or value."
that said - when I look at the values posted at coppercoins website that range loosely from $2.00 - $8.00 or so, depending on condition of course. my question is are these values reasonably accurate, given the quote, or is the quote reasonably accurate? I believe $2.00 on up for a single cent is quite a high value. I'm not questions anyone's expertise here, but something seems inconsistent. thanks.
I agree with Charles. Unless its a very dramatic lookin DDR on them columns with some very nice pictures then they really dont sell. Randomly you will see one on ebay. I sold maybe 2.
Me myself would never buy one or even keep one. I look at Machine Doubling as better eye candy. Same with most of the the Newer DD on some of the newer coins (statequarter, ect). They all look like microscopic die chips. If ya have to put 10 arrows on your coin image to point it out and have it under a 100x scope it's just not exciting. I would rather take a die crack or a WAM first or even a good old struck through Greaser. He he
Well, I sort of wish the standard of listing these things had never started in the first place. It would be nice to delete them all and go back to listing 'interesting' die varieties rather than every single die variety no matter how minor. Having said that, we have skipped hundreds of them due to them being just too minor to bother...but my tolerance level of what's too minor to bother has changed over the years.
Back when these first came out, we saw them selling for $5-$10 for BU examples, because at least back then they seemed to be somewhat scarce. After time, people sending them in for attribution expected the value to remain consistent for THEIR coin, so we kept listing them with the same basic value structure that had been put in place when the doubled columns were first reported...which is wrong, I know. We should be dictating what we believe the coins should really be worth, not letting the community dictate it for us.
Anyhow...I haven't seen a single sale of a doubled column without doubled knees or feet in a long time, and would venture to guess that anyone interested has found a sample and is likely not interested in trying to complete a 'set' of these. That being said, sales at above face value would be a stretch at best.
