Is it right to sell some of your coins with you don't really need or already have to buy the ones you do need. I'm really sad whenever I sell some of my coins, not that they're expensive but I like them. I dont really need some of them but whenever I want to sell some of them it seems like I'm selling a part of myself, sounds crazy. And it's not like I'm in the need, thanks god, but I just want to buy some of the coins I do need and those require extra cash. So what would be the right choice?

The right answer will be different for everyone. If it crushes you to sell any of your coins, you probably should not sell them unless you really really need to. If however, after you sell the coins, you feel better after buying your upgrade, then you should sell when it will allow you to upgrade.

It does not sound crazy! I have never sold a coin.

The closest I have come was trading some 40% half dollars I found roll searching for Franklin half dollars. I did not have them long, so I never got attached to them.

I don't sell too many, but sometimes, you gotta! For the greater good! Your collection will thank you!

There are coins I am emotionally attached to and would never sell, well hopefully not. If it happens to be one you can live without, by all means, sell and upgrade or if you need the $$ ;-)

I'm a hoarder type myself. The funny thing is that I have a number of coins I wouldn't mind selling. But those are the low value coins that wouldn't make enough money to bother with the effort. For example I got a 1951-D quarter in VG-F condition in change a month or two ago. RedBook is about $4, but it wouldn't surprise me if all I could get for it was a dollar or two. Hardly worth the effort of doing an ebay auction and I'd probably spend more in gas going to a coin shop than they'd give me for it. Yet because it is a silver quarter that's worth several times its face value I feel compelled to keep it in my collection (even though I have ones in better condition)!

Anything I have that would actually be worth my time and effort to sell from a monetary standpoint I like to much to liquidate!

I've never sold a coin. My two oldest sons typically get my duplicates and anything left I try to trade on the forum. There is Nothing wrong with selling coin though. If you make your collection better, why not do it.

I feel your pain!

I've sold a bunch of coins this because I got laid-off last spring. It was tough at first but once I sold a few the pain subsided!

With the price of gold skyrocketing this fall I've sold a bunch of gold and now have money to buy more coins! Hadn't bought much in about 7 months and it's fun!

I've also cleared out some of my "poorer choices" and don't have to think about them any more. It's a good learning experience.

So by all means sell if you need money to buy more.

I feel the exact same way. I could never let go of a coin. They do feel like part of me. Most of mine have been handed down generations, but I'm the first one who knows what they are. When I got them, they were all in bags and tin foil.

I cant part with any of my coins. I am still sitting on nearly 500 susan b's that I need to cash in and purchase that 1949s franklin which will finish my franklin collection, but I just cant seem to let any coin go. Good luck making up your mind which way to go.

Buy, sell and trade. I have done it all in an effort to improve my collection/inventory. Personally I would tell you to keep the finest example of a coin for your personal collection and any duplicates convert into other coins you need. It makes sense if your goal is to have an example of every coin to fill a book/collection. The only exception to this rule was if you have children and want to give each of them a collection of the same coins in which case you produce as many sets as you need for the kids or grandkids. Coin collecting is a great way to have parent/grandparent time and will help your heirs learn both to appreciate coin collecting as well as to help them learn values of coins. Sincerely, John Leckrone

This is all really silly you know. Your on your way to an Ulcer. I can fix this for you easily. Don't listen to those coin collectors since they too hoard coins. Do as I say, not as they do. Just take one of those USPS boxes that hold up to 77 pounds, place all your coins, albums, 2x2's, coin books in there and send to me. I'll do the worrying for you and suffer for you. And then you'll be free to go out drinking, partying, buying new cars to help our economy, etc.
See how easy it all is.
For real I've never sold a coin in well over 60 years now. Stupid little round metal things become part of your family.
