My girlfriend sold me (face value!!) her coin collection today ... I had to stack it so that I could easily count it and figure out how much to give her. It came out to a little over $250.

I'm basically trying to learn the history and idiosyncracies behind modern coinage before I go back in time, and learn about our older coins. In the process, I'm having oodles of fun, and learning a lot about minting, coin conditions, and grading.

Here's a picture of my new loot:

Hi Moosenuckle:

I'm curious about your girlfriend's ex-collection. How did she collect the coins? Was there some objective in particular she was trying to reach? From the photos, everything looks like ordinary pocket change.

Do let us know!

No no ... those are her 'change' coins ... she didn't collect a thing... she was saving all of her change to go to the bank one day and deposit it... I just made it easy for her.... So far I've gone through about 1/3 of the quarters, and it's all '65+ ...

That's a good place to start! May I make a suggestion? If you don't already have one, go out and get yourself a Red Book- you can find them at any bookstore or coin shop. That way you can learn some coin history, and if you find anything unusual in your new hoard you might be able to find out about it in the book!
