This is another coin I bought. There is little sense in paying half as much for a fine or very fine coin, so I went as high as I could for a pleasing example. It was graded by the seller but I am asking for your opinions on what you think the grade is. Thank you! Moved to Grading subforum - Sap

Very nice toning on this coin. Is that a die break running from the T in UNITED to the T in STATES? I see only the slightest bit of rub on some of the leaves. Detail is at least AU-58. Nice buy.

I do see the die break, yes and there are a couple strands of paper particles on the 2x2. Thanks for your input. I'll let all know what the grade was stated by seller after a few more responses.

Looks like slight friction on extreme high points. I also agree with AU58. My seller guess is MS64BN.

Very nice coin! I agree with the other posts that this is an AU coin. Could go 55 or 58.
Sometimes high AU coins "slide" into MS holders hence the name "sliders". This is a good example of a slider that could be in an MS63BN slab.

Cant fool you guys. The seller was honest. I agreed with his grade and bought this as described. Seller said:

I'm really horrible with these, as I guessed XF-45 first, haha.

Boy, its right there....pounding on the door of MS. I have some Shield nickels just like it. Just the slightest hint of light wear on the leaf tips. Ever so slight and even it would be very easy for them to slide given the timing on when they come across the grading table. I would still give it very high marks not just in grade but in overall eye appeal. A wonderful enjoyable coin. Also kudos to the seller for posting it honestly. Going for a type set Wheezy?

That's right tecc, I thought he had a good selection of buy it now coins and some attractive others. We'll see what the coins I ordered show up like and what kind of service I get. I wrote and asked him a question but it was the weekend. I have not gotten a reply yet. I don't collect many copper coins myself but this one grabbed me and there seems to be no sense in paying for a worn coin when the higher grades are only double in price. I too liked the detail and sharp strike, I think it will look pretty good in hand. His images are darker than actual coin I am betting.

Boy I just could not give this anything but an MS grade. AU-58 and MS-60, MS-61 are so similar. The only difference in my opinion is it wear or weak strike. Point out the wear so I can see the differnce.

Yes I am banging around working on a type set of sorts, RFB. Trying to stick to the rule of not settling for ordinary but watching my pocketbook. I had a little extra cash and I'm knocking off a few types as my Christmas present to me which will be like saving money rather than blowing it on an IPod or a PlayStation 3 or even a Tickle me Elmo. I had one ( not Elmo ) 20 years ago and I seriously regret selling it off. These coins have shot up quite a bit. Even the lower grades are expensive compared to back then. Since a type set isn't really ever complete, I am rather, making a collection of type coins that a sit down with the Grand kids someday, will hopefully spark some interest other than "How much is that one worth?"

I can't see any wear at all. With any luster at all I would go BU, but certainly agree with AU-58. Very nicely struck and original.

Everyone else has had a go so I think I'll join in. It's a fancy 5 the more common of the two 1865 date types. I would not call this an MS coin I would call it a nice AU 55 maybe 58 in hand. Look at the arrows and you will see some wear especially the right side. This is not from a weak strike as the arrow head would be rounded not flattened if it was a strike issue. Also look at the leaves below Trust and you will see some wear. The two scrolls on the sides of the shield below the arrows should both have clearly defined circles, The center leaf on the left should have the vein at least ¾ of the way down, it appears to be just over half. The Rev is masked slightly by the dirt. But again the veins on the top of the wheat leaves should extend to the end. There is a distracting ding on the bottom right of the ribbon. If that is a die crack running from the end of the wheat stalk on the left to the rim than this is an indication of one of the RPD varieties of which there are many for the 1865. Bigger/better pictures might change my opinion..
