For some reason my father in law had 20 rolls of 1968S pennys. They all look brand new to me. Since he is gone I can't ask him why so I thought some of you may know something about this coin. Thanks,

He might have gotten them in speculation because it was the first year that the S mint was used since 1955? It would be interesting to know what they were selling for in 1968. Was there a bit of a craze in hoarding?

I would totally agree with wd on this. Also I believe there was a craze to hoard these coins and for the last few years( the next generation )are selling these B you rolls for a decent premium.....Again, welcome to the family...

Thanks for the info. He was a hoarder allright. He was in WWII, and landed on Omaha Beach, shook hands with Patton and 2 Purple Hearts. He LOVED War Nickels, we have alot of War Nickels. I love looking at them, I guess I should look through the rolls and find the good ones. Wornslick

Wow, your father in law was one heck of a man! The 1968-S cent was mainly hoarded as other state, it was the first S mint cent in quite a few years. It also happens to be the lowest mintage Memorial cent produced. If you're not interested in keeping all 20 rolls, you'd have no problem selling them. Unfortunately, they are not terribly valuable with a wholesale price of around $1.50 per roll. I assume they are wrapped in bank, paper rolls? If so, they will fetch a bit more than that, perhaps $5 each or so. Anyhow....welcome to CC!

Thanks to all for the kind words and the info. Yes he was quite the man. He really loved coin collecting, I wish I had gotten into it while he was still around, but I do remember a few times when he would pull out a few coins to show me and talk about them. Most all the rolls are in paper except for a couple that are in plastic tubes.

What do the paper rolls look like? Are the ends just folded over or are they crimped ( called shotgun rolls)? What does it say on the paper?

So far all the rolls have folded ends. Some say 50 cents (the abbreviation) and the Pennies with a large P and S. Some rolls say 50 cents Abb agin in light blue And Pnns between each 50 cents. Also .50 on the ends of the rolls that fold.
