what do you think is the best for roll hunting as far as good finds, penny varieties is a little too tedious but wheats and Indian are good. I had fair luck with nickels, filled my books with quarters and dimes but never found any silver. Thoughts? finds? thanks

I've enjoyed both Nickels and Cents. It's not too hard to complete a decent set of memorials out of a few boxes of cents. The nickels seem to be easier on the eyes for me thought.
Haven't tried quarters yet, but the few dime rolls I've gone through were productive at filling holes, but it's harder to evaluate the detail on the smaller coins.
Regardless of the denomination it's still the joy of the hunt IMHO. Maybe one of the reasons cents and nickels are "funner" is because the GEM's really stand out. That being said from my limited experience I've still not found a Buffalo or Indian in the wild.

I mainly do nickels. You can usually get 1 War Nickel per box, and there are some pretty rare dates worth keeping like the 50-D. I've had 2 buffalos so far.

I have been doing nickels in between halves, 4 boxes so far 1 V nickel, 3 buffalo, 3 War Nickels. I have better luck with nickels.

i like nickels it's not to hard to get a complete set from rolls minus the 50-D and you still find a lot of the older dates

I find nickels the best after halves, with a bit of luck you can finish the Jefferson series entirely from circualtion. Buffalos, silver warnickels, Cuds, broken collars, proofs, V nickels, misaligned dies, and high grade early jefferson all make nickels more fun to me. Nickels circulate much less than quarters and dimes so worthwhile finds tend to stay in circulation longer. Nickels probably have the second highest rate (halves being first) of silver and proof finds out of all the denomonations. The hardness of the planchets means that nickels have the highest frequency of errors out of all the denominations. Dimes can also be finished (without the 1993 w) from circulation with some patience. On adveradge you'll find around 1 silver dime per box, and Mercury dimes still show up occasionally. Quarters are absurdly hard to roll search, even after working at a bank and going through dozens of boxes I still have only found 3 silver quarters in rolls. They tend to circulate to much for anything interesting to be left in the wild for to long. Dollar coins can also be fun to search as there are a great number of NIFC sacs that have been dumped into circualtion, errors, and proofs also occasionally appear. -XoG

I think nickels are worthy of your time. The Brinks boxes I've been getting lately have been yielding on average 1 Buffalo per box. Yesterday I got my 2nd Liberty nickel (1911) and I've been finding lots of War Nickels. I haven't been lucky enough to find any Key dates. I really like searching halves but the pickings have been slim around here, although I did get a 90% and a 40% today.

Pardon my ignorance but do you go to the bank and get the rolls to search. What's a Brink Box? Thanks,

Brinks rolls are the plastic wrapped. a Brinks Box is 50 rolls ($100.00) worth of nickels. Yes, the bank is the best place to get rolls, although if searching only a few rolls you may be able to get them elsewhere.

The key to searching anything is volume, it takes time and patience for the best finds to show up. Its almost like playing the lottery but losing time instead of money. -XoG

Matt, dimes are your best bet for consistent silver. On average, I find about 2-3 silver dimes per box. Barbers, mercs, rosies, dimes give it up. Although I never have found a barber or Mercury dime, I had a friend on another forum that searched boxes regularly, and boy, did he haul in the murcuries. His name was fistfulladirt. I have heard Barbers turn up very occasionally, and a newbie on another one of my forums got one in his first dime roll hunt. Also, where you are located will determine dime success. If you are on the East coast, chances are handrolled dimes will be crap, and you will definitely want to buy boxes. However, if you are on the West cost, -like in Cali-Both handrolled and boxes will be good. The reason for this is one word- pressure. In the East, people are typically smarter than they are than say, out here in Cali. That means that more people CRH in the East, and out here in Cali,in the West, there is a lot of virgin soil. Just to give you an idea of how good Dime Roll Hunting is out here, I have not skunked since I started buying in incraments of $250!! Also, bags may be good, although I have never tried them. Coin Mojo, another heckuva good CRHer on one of my forums, found a liberty seated in a dime bag! By the way,you probably already know this, but just in case you don't, silver dimes are dated 1964 and before and are characterized by a silvery-white edge. Sometimes the edges are dirty which makes them easy to miss. Always check an edge that looks suspiciously black.(I almost missed the 1964D I found yesterday) Hope this helps. Good luck - coincrazed

though i'am prejudiced to Lincoln Cent varieties, due to not finding any (personally)this year {yet } ,i sorted out a couple of rolls each, of the first three types LMC's in hopefully MS65's or betters (from 4-6 boxes of each different type)100 best from apx.10,000+ coins. instead of focusing on varieties so much.this can also be done with the other denoms - well at least when you start with UNC's in bulk 2009 US coinage release or I should say the lack of it has changed the 'what'i collect to more of 'what' can i collect.?.this was my first year selling UNC rolls and you guessed it they were all 2009-D cents I was lucky enough to get in quantity, face, from nearby bank.
