Hi guys. I have a question about the Greysheet versus the Blue Book of U.S. coins by R.S. Yeoman. What is better for pricing coins? I have been looking at ebay for 1921 & 1921D Mercury dimes using Blue Book prices, but the coins go up much higher than Blue Book price. Do these bidders know something I don't? Is the Blue Book accurate? Please help. - coincrazed

I seriously doubt that you will find any semi-keys at Blue Book prices because that is meant as a wholesale guide, not retail. Also, the main flaw of the Blue and Red Books are the fact that they are only published once a year so that can lead to inaccuracies. Greysheet is more or less a dealer to dealer buy and sell price guide, hence the proper name Coin Dealer's Newsletter. It is published as a weekly guide in addition to monthly and quarterly supplements so it is fairly accurate. Because it is meant for dealer to dealer transactions though, the general collecting public usually does not get coins for those prices.

If I understand your question correctly, it seems that you are asking about which book is better for pricing coins to buy on places like ebay. If that is correct I'd say you'd be better off with the RedBook instead of the Bluebook. The RedBook's goal is to reflect the current retail price for a given coin (well, as much as a once per year publication can!). In a sense it can be used to set an upper limit on what a coin "should" go for if you are a regular collector. The PCGS price guide might be another good source for retail prices that is more up to date.

Don't think of ebay as anything but a retail source for coins. Everyone knows about ebay and anyone can use it, so having the mindset that it is a wholesale operation is incorrect. Of course in an auction situation you can get great deals, but auctions also create a buyer frenzy that can make things go for far more than they are worth.

Price guides are just that....guides. Look on sites that actually sell coins to find the going rate in the open market. I generally look on ebay, Heritage & Teletrade to get an idea of what coins are selling for & use that information to decide what I am willing to pay.

Being cheap I then try to find coins selling for 20% or more less than those prices. My collection hasn't grown very fast, but half the fun for me is the hunt for a deal.
