Hi guys I'm wondering what the average number of rolls you must go through to find a Buffalo nickel or Mercury dime while searching rolls. I have been wanting to find a mercury, so I wanted to know how many rolls you generally have to go through. I have found one buffalo. - coincrazed

well I have found 3 buffalos in 1 roll and to get roll I have probably gone through 50-60 rolls I dont think it counts though as finding 3 in every 60 rolls since they were back to back in the same roll

I don't know about nickels and dimes, I am still working through the wheat pennies. I can't wait to find out though.

The last couple of weeks I've been finding close to 1 Buffalo per box (50 rolls). Today One box had 2, one box had 1, one box had 0. Usually it's not quite that good. I don't bother searching dimes because the silver finds are very low..although better than searching quarters. There's as much silver in a 40% half dollar as 2 silver dimes (and 40% halves are alot easier to find!)

Each week, I search 4 cents, 4 nickels,1 dime and quarter. In general, I find a Wheat penny, some 09 cents(3-4), and never anything in dimes.

Ratman, out here in Cali, dimes give it up. I agree-silver halves ARE easy to find, but first you got to FIND the halves. Now THERE is a problem. Out here in Cali, halves don't circulate much. Actually, I was using halves to buy some jigs and other tackle in a K-mart, and the clerk had NO idea what halves were! She asked me if they were legal tender and had to call her manager over to make sure they were real. Also, you don't get skunked much with dimes, and plus the bank I'm going to know won't even order halves. So I'm satisfied with searching dimes and nickels. You can't go wrong with dimes. My bud Fistfulladirt made me a big believer in them. Good luck! - coincrazed

Yeah, Wornslick. You have GOT to do some dimes. Buy a box or 2 along with your usual penny habit.(a box is $250) You'll be surprised at what you find. Be sure to edge search. Good luck! - coincrazed

I used to search rolls of nickels and dimes. I always hoped to find a Buffalo nickel or a Mercury dime. Unfortunately I never did. Ironically after I stopped roll searching I found a Mercury dime on the ground and another one I received in change.

I don't see the problem. It probably means you don't have a "dumper". If that's the case, you may not have another Searcher nearby. Just keep checking, some will show up.
As for dimes, I've done my fair share of "edge" searching rolls. I used to work at a fairly large store that would get in 3-4 Brinks boxes of dimes a week. Back then I regularly pulled 2-3 Silvers out of a box. Found me quite a few Mercs too. Mostly completed 2 sets of Rosies that way and put together over a dozen rolls. That was over 15 years ago. I've seen the # of silver dime finds greatly dwindle since then. I edged search 2 boxes not long ago and nothing.
I've found more silver in half dollars during the last 10 months than I have found in silver dimes since I started collecting 37 years ago!

With nickels, I average about 1 buff a box (50rolls). I really can't give a number for the mercs, I have found quite a few, but never paid attention to how many rolls it took between finds.

I just finished searching 50 rolls of nickels and found no buffalos or silver (actually, never have found any buffalos). I did find about 15 pre 60's. I lack about a dozen jeffersons to finish a dansco.
