Was at Walmart tonight with my girlfriend's kids, standing in the checkout line. They were doing the buying; I was just looking into the cash drawer (like I always do!) On top of the cash drawer area I spotted a silver colored Lincoln. Thinking it was a 1943 Steel, in near Gem condition (I couldn't see the date) I offered the checkout girl a cent for it. She gave me a look like "what would you want this thing for" and she said sure. When I saw it was a LMC I really got interested! Here are the pics: http://i591.photobucket.com/albums/...DSCF2176.jpghttp://i591.photobucket.com/albums/...DSCF2177.jpgOther than the copper colored spot on Lincoln's cheek there is not a single hint of copper anywhere on the coin. 99% certain it is an unplated planchet. Thanks Walmart! Edited by copper nickel daddy 12/07/2009 10:25 pm

Dazzling! You could search a lot of rolls for one and there you get it in change. Did Wal-mart count it as a dime?

I'm more than surprised that a zinc penny could look so nice after 11 years in circulation. Could it be a normal penny dipped in plating solution or paint or ?

Wheezy,
No, it was sitting on top of the cash drawer in that little area where the cashier might keep a pen or keys or something. It was not in the drawer.
Brannenworks.
Definitely not. One look at it in hand and you can tell it is not plated at all. Matter of fact, it feels very light. Does the copper plating add any appreciable weight to the coin? One would almost guess it to be aluminum. Either way, it is off to ANACS as part of that 10 coin special they are running this month!

That's beautiful. How much of an added value would that have?

Quote: I'm more than surprised that a zinc penny could look so nice after 11 years in circulation Just because it is 11 years old, that does not mean that it has circulated for 11 years. It could have easily been in someones coin jar for the past 10+ years. Quote: Does the copper plating add any appreciable weight to the coin? Not really, the weigh tolerance is +/-0.1g for the planchet as a whole which is a bit more than the weight of the plating. Appearance is the best authenticator of unplated cents- you must have luster and flow lines with no porous or overly bright surfaces.
