Here is a guide that you might like to print and save of the image below.

While the 9 may appear chisel tipped, the angle of the 9 points in the wrong direction. The 7 is lower than the tops of the 9 & 0. Keep looking but remember: I've never found one in circulation or in rolls of OBW ones. So it is not odd not to find one. They are out there, just hard to find. A friend gave me mine for some editing work I did for her.

Yeah, joe... another large date.

But, take Richards advice, and keep looking.

Coop, As usual great explanation and superior photos, I am still of the belief that all the pup's used for this coin are great, but the one I found to be among the most outstanding, is if the 9 has both ends pointed, no doubt, a small date coin.Mike....PS, Joe, do your self a favor, being involved in collecting coins I have found a point of reference, like a small date cent(as suggested) or the CherryPickers Guide to rare die varieties, 4th edition, volume one, would IMO for you would help you along in the hobby you obviously are very passionate about, knowledge is power !Good luck.

Joe_finds: How about purchasing one genuine small date cent so you will be able to see it in hand? If you've never seen the real deal in person it can be quite difficult to imagine locating one.

Once you see one in hand, it's very easy.

a good suggestion. for as may questions as I have had, (and after MANY incorrectly identified coins), each time I have actually found the "real deal" - it has been almost like an epiphany - each time, it has been that clear. there is nothing like having the "genuine article" in hand to compare to - and know that you have the real deal.
