Statistically, SDB are the best place for your coin collection. Not just for protection against crime but also against natural disaster, fire, accidents, etc.

The summation that puts all arguments to rest.

I do have a coin rider for the junk I keep at home, but not all of it can be replaced. I have some unique Memorial cents lying around the house. They are not particularily valuable, but they probably can't be replaced. Hopefully I'll never have to replace them.

My house if very, very secure with a monitored alarm system, 100+ lb dog that likes to bark at strangers, and all my guns. As most of you may already know, I'm a concealed carry permit holder so I'm ALWAYS packing.

Nothing personal 925dealers but try and remember that way to many stories on the internet are either wrong, erroneous, exagerated, completely made up and sometimes wrong. Not that these links are such, but when you consider the virtual millions and millions of safe deposit boxes in the USA, and if those articles are even slightly true, those are a really tiny percentage. So many stories have been reported about such things over the years that not to long ago, I went to a branch of Bank of America about the safety of the SDB's. Might be erroneous, exagerated or just lack of information but I've been assured that at that bank those so called stories of any government doing what those stories mention are just off the wall, so to speak. I've got 5 SDB's in 5 different banks. Had them for at least 30 years now. NONE of them have ever had the government break into a SDB. YES, the banks have many times when there have been no payments and/or visitations in more than 2 years and a 1 year contract. In fact they do give people a one year chance to catch up. Listings are posted yearly in this area of all such SCB's with the names of the individuals that applied for them and the dates.
Again, try to remember that some great advise I've heard about the internet is to BELIEVE NOTHING OF WHAT YOU HEAR AND ONLY HALF OF WHAT YOU SEE.

I'm truly envious. I wish California would get their act together on that issue but as long as folks keep putting the same officials back in office, nothing will ever change. Our government is too busy spending money they don't have and letting criminals out of prison early. It's definitely time to bail.

It's a shame really. I could really go off on politics, but this is not the place for it. The bottomline for me....it's no persons right to take away the right for me to defend myself and my family from the scum of society. All anti-gun laws do is stack the deck in favor of criminals. They do not obey gun laws and they never will.

There is one small item about SDB's that most do not even think about. In every bank I have a SDB the entire place is Air Conditioned. That means the SDB area too is Air Conditioned. A/C units remove a real lot of moisture in the air and they have much better units than most of us in our homes. No humidity, no dirt, no dust, just good old fashioned clean air for your coins.
If you think about that your coins in a SDB have it healtheir than we do for ourselves.

My name is Mike . . . . victim of the burglary referenced in the above posts. Your symathies are appreciated and criticisms accepted as lessons.

For those of you who don't know the whole story, I had a safe deposit box at the time of the burglary, but had brought home the majority of my inventory for a few days. Circumstance coupled with poor judgement led me to do so . . .

I needed approximately 20 coins to package a PCGS submission and to ship a few expensive coins to ebay customers. With too little time left before the bank closing, I grabbed 2 PCGS boxes from the SDB and brought them home to save time. The boxes of coins went into my briefcase, so noone at the bank knew whether contents were coming or going. This is normal practice for me, and would keep a thief guessing, even if he/she knew what I do. I am a very low profile dealer, and very few people know what I do . . . I prefer to keep it that way.

I must confess though, that I already had 3 PCGS boxes of lesser expensive coins at home, primarily for convenience. That too has since changed. This loss has given me new perspective . . .

That I had no security system or insurance rider was clearly my fault. The value of one's holdings increases over time, and can really sneak up on you, as it did in my case . . . that's no good excuse, just how it happened. Anyway, I now have the security system in place and keep as many of the coins in the SDB as much as possible. I'm also trying to get insured as I rebuild my business

For those of you fearing government siezure of holdings in your safe deposit box, invocation of the War Powers Act could require the bank to withhold your access to the box until a goverment representative is present. I don't believe the government may access your box without you being present. Your banker should confirm this for you, if reluctantly. I don't think this would be a problem for me, as I can demonstrate my holdings as being business inventory from which I derive income. For hoarders, however, their position might be a bit contentious. I think collectors are safe, as long as they don't have more than just a few gold piece of the same date . . . a diversity of dates is probably a safer position.

Mike, your loss totally sucks. Do you belong to the ANA? Are you aware of the coin insurance firm that ANA members can join and have fairly inexpensive insurance? It's MUCH cheaper than most any rider you can get with a typical insurance company. The insurance is very reasonable especially if you keep most of your stuff in a SDB and a fraction outside. They allow you to split the coverage just for the exact circumstances you spoke of.

I hate thieves and am sorry for your lose but. Leaving a bank with a briefcase was a red flag for someone. I've made a great deal of mistakes and learned not to trust many people, especially banks. If your going in and out of SDB a lot someone, if not all working in that bank will take notice. Remember they all have access to all your personal and financial information. Not having a security system at your home means you don't have personal safety.

Hope you recover your coins and the thief gets hard time.

No SDB for me. I think the most valuable belonging in my house is the refrigerator that I paid $1600 for. No flat screen TV, no fancy electronics(outside of what my company provides for me), no coins over $100. I like it that way. If some clown wants to steal my stuff, let him. It's insured.

Just for info, I checked with my agent and she said I could get coverage for my coins (a rider on my homeowners) for $1.43/hundred with no deductible.

I understand your thought Figman, and it's very easy for anyone to start down that path, but let me shed further light on the circumstances of the burglary.

My 89 year old neighbor saw the 2 burglars leave a third accomplice as a lookout in their car and run down my 660 foot driveway and into the woods. At the time, he didn't call the police because he wasn't sure they weren't chasing after a runaway dog, or some such thing. He watched for them to come back to the car, which they never did. After nearly half an hour, the car simply drove off . . . too bad his eyesight isn't good enough to have recorded their registration number. I surmise that the thieves in the house called out with a cell phone to get picked up at the nearest side street, which is about 400 yards through the woods.

The interesting thing is that their haul was not limited to my coins, but included jewelry, a Nintendo DS, a laptop computer, about 20 DVDs and VHS box sets, and a 100 pound 46 inch flat panel television . . . yes, you read that right. An awful lot for 2 people to carry 400 yards through the woods.

So, I am certain it was not an inside job . . . in fact, I'm certain the coins came as a complete surprise to them. If they'd known in advance what kind of coins I dealt in, they would never even have touched the other stuff.

I've been hoping that they, apparently not being coin-knowledgable, were not savvy enough to remove the coins from the holders. Unfortunately, since the burglary took place September 8th, I'm now quite sure the coins are all raw, or in new holders.

My best chance of locating them now is by pointing people to photos (type ToughCOINS into an ebay search . . . a small percentage of the stolen coins will come up), or for people to recognize a group of rare coins on my list of stolen inventory . . . many were quite scarce, with a few being rare.

First of all Mike, to the CCF. It's wonderful to have you. It's tough reading that last post. I know every CCF member hopes for the safe return of your coins. When they catch these people, and believe me, they will be caught, I hope the book is thrown at them! Again I'm truly sorry. If we can do anything to help you recover these coins, we will

I don't know what this guy was thinking. At the very least he should have a safe in his house. I recently bought a large gun safe for my home. I don't put my guns in there though. They are locked up in other places. But if the thief can get my 300-400 pound safe up the basement stairs, through the garage and out onto his car, he deserves the contents of the box.
