If you are going to store a large quantity of coins in your home, at least have them properly insured

Though I consider my collection modest to say the least, I would be devastated if something happen to it. I keep most of my collection in SDB's at various banks. I was just talking to my girl friend about upping the insurance, which I will definitely do.

This thread makes me smile, I have the best of both worlds. I work at the bank where I have 3 SDBs. I am also in the process of making a digital record of all the valuable coins so I can "see" them whenever I want from the comfort of my office chair. I agree with DAN505, I hate thieves. I also must say I like the "get it done" attitude that hhbkiddo shows, just get a jackhammer and fix the problem. I may have to go that route when I retire.

Quote: The dealer was a fool for not having coin insurance. Okay, he didn't deserve to be ripped off, but he took no precautions either Exactly my point. $200! Are you kidding!

Quote: ...before committing to a safety box at your local bank. Paranoia will destroyia. SDB are the safety, cheapest and dare I say "best" place for valuables. These "articles" cited do not jive with reality. I have relatives with SBD in at least 8 or 9 different states and we are not worried because we don't need to be worried. I have owned a SDB for at least 20 years using different banks in Illinois, Iowa and Missouri depending on where I lived. Never a problem Don't attempt to dissuade people from protecting their valuables in SDB. As stated they are cheap, effective and very safe. Someday there may be an apocalypse, in the meantime I'll rest comfortably knowing my collection is safe in my SDB and so can millions of other people.

Plus, insurance is really cheap (esp. for ANA members) if you holding the coins mainly in SDB's. Both are a no-brainer.

A SDB is one of the most important things for a serious collector to have....end of story. I keep NO valuable coins in my house, it's just not worth the risk considering theft, fire, tornado, etc. Why take the risk for just a couple hundred dollars a year? The only downfall it is a bit of a pain to add/retrieve coins, but that's a pain I'm willing to live with for the piece of mind.

Thanks 925Dealer for posting those very informative links. I never had a clue that could happen. I loved the look on his face when the reporter showed him it only took a few minutes for her to find him on the internet. Like my Grandfather, I never have trusted banks and for good reasons.

Okay, I read and watched 925dealers videos and articles. First off, these are mainly Wells Fargo and Bank of America who I don't bank with for several reasons. Secondly, it looks like these people are coming back to their boxes after quite some time, possibly years. I visit my box once per week, have a record of every time I go in there, and have had this box for 4 years and never had a problem. It's paranoia plain and simple. What's the alternative, keep everything in your home? Believe me, I am armed to the teeth in my home but, if a thief gets the drop on you and wants that safe open or the location of your valuables, guess what, your opening it or disclosing the location. I just don't want to put myself in that situation. I don't like keeping my valuables at the bank either. I just don't see any other alternative.

I have a large SDB and it is getting embarassing when I visit because I can just barely carry it to the room. The bank attendants are starting to laugh at my struggles. Anyone who keeps a collection worth over a thousand dollars at home, is asking for trouble.

HA, my dog is worth a lot more then a thousand dollars ;-)
How about your watch and personal jewelry $$$$$$$$$ How about your family, how much are they worth too you. Keep any cash around the house for quick buy's? Do you have all your family photos in a SDB too? Have any guns, are they in a SDB.
It's like this people, we just can't keep are whole lives in a SDB, life has risks. I'm not arguing with any one for having a SDB, it's your choice. I refuse to let crime dictate my life style,

I'm sure most of us feel that way too but I choose to take safeguards in certain aspects of my life. For those that don't believe in SDB's, keep your collection at home then. All you have to do is insure it. You'll get your $$ back but not your irreplaceable coins and items. I choose not to do this as most of my collection is priceless to me. By the way, loved ones will ALWAYS come before any material items Unfortunately, you can't keep them in a SDB

Dictate is one thing, common sense is another. I don't walk through housing projects on Chicago's south side at 1:00 a.m. either though. Statistically, SDB are the best place for your coin collection. Not just for protection against crime but also against natural disaster, fire, accidents, etc.
