I attended the lamest coin show yesterday. Got to the place and found that there were a total of six dealers. One was selling metal detectors only and another was selling collecting supplies and books of all kinds. The other four had jacked their prices to some where between 2 and 3 times fair market value. $13 for an AU 69D Kennedy half, come on, how do they expect to sell at that price? Only one guy was buying, He offered me a whopping $15 a roll for 40% halves . And laughed I did, I just did not roll on the floor while doing it though. The wife was impressed with the prices they had put on paper currency, but not in a good way. $210 for two consecutive serial numbered $1 1957 star notes (ungraded). Needless to say we did not stay very long.

WOW! I haven't been to many shows, but that sounds horrible in so many ways. What a waste of time other than to have a story to tell.

How long did it take you to get there? It would be much more depressing if you drove more than half an hour.

I can imagine how awkard it must have felt. Each dealer could hear what you were saying to the other.

Quote: He offered me a whopping $15 a roll for 40% halves Oh brother...that's like over $50 melt value? The last show here had more than 6 dealers, but it was still disappointing--very few are buying new stock; I had picked everything through already.

Quote: He offered me a whopping $15 a roll for 40% halves I think I might have told him to pull his head out of his butt, have his eyes checked and turn up his hearing aid! Then inform him (in sign language I guess) that Silver is over $17.00 (not $7.00) an ounce. Even at $7.00 an ounce the melt value is over $20.00 a roll. I figure at $5.07 ounce a roll of 40% would be worth $15.00 melt. The sad thing is that he probably has bought many at this price from the unwary.

I hope they didn't charge any admission.

Sounds more like a bourse than a show.
We have one here in Winnipeg, the second Sunday of every month. The number of dealers varies between five and six, and some sell stamps only.
However, the last thing they do is jack up their prices; if anything their prices are lower than normal because they want to move stuff as they're all sharing the bill for the banquet room they set up in. And if you buy a lot of stuff, it's amazing how much they'll discount it; for example, the last one I was at, I got $55 worth of stuff from one dealer (at his prices) for $40, which I would term a heavy discount, especially since his prices were low to begin with.
Sounds to me like the guys at the one you went to just didn't get it.

How many people showed up? The thought that everyone else can hear you is a little off-putting...

That is really depressing. And if you had to drive any distance to get there would also be something to get ticked off about. What State is that in so I could avoid that one. We sure are lucky around this area. There are 4 coin shows a Month within about15 miles of my house. One on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Sundays of every Month, all year long regardless of hollidays. And sometimes a few of those really large ones at the same time also. All are free admittance, free parking, free pamphlets, usually from 30 to 100 dealers and at last Sundays show, free coffee and donuts. However, the coffee should have had a sign that we should accept money to even try it.

Well guys I did have to drive far. Only took 45 minutes to get there. The show was in New Bern N.C. I was very disappointed by this one for more reasons than were in my original post. The last one they had there was great. Lots of people showed for that one, maybe a dozen or so for this last one. There were a lot more dealers there also. I do not know what went wrong at the one this past weekend but I will not go back unless they just happen to have it on the same weekend that the wife and I go up that way to buy a few crates of blueberries next summer.

Coin shows and many other types of shows either grow or schink depending on many things. One is sometimes a location. As many drive a lot and find a show depressing, they don't go back. This starts that chain reaction where less and less attend including dealers. Same with prices. If way to high, collectors don't go back and that too starts the chain reaction of less and less people. Nothing to attract new people also is a method of keeping people away. Such as free admission, free parking, free coffee, door prices, things for kids, etc. At some shows people go there just for all that and a place to take their kids for something to do rather than computer games. Around me coin shows have been growing at a massive rate due to all thoes types of little things that draw people. At one show I go to they have a table by the door with piles of adds for other shows, dealers shops, several donated magazines such as Numismedia, Coin World, etc. and all free. Also, on a table by the main door is a bowl of candy which for some reason attracts kids. Many dealers have a so called JUNK box of coins for kids to look through. Parking is free, admittance is free, many dealers give kids little things free, Occationally a door prize, etc. Possibly if you mention things like this to the individuals that run those shows they would improve rather than fad away.

Wow, hopefully my first coin show experience is better then that. I cant seem to find many around the Dover, Delaware area, in fact the only one I found is the Baltimore Coin Expo in March, which I plan on being my first Coin Show, hopefully its a good one. Anyone know of any other shows in the tri state are?
