Just doing my daily walk through ebay and saw this ad. It turned my stomach.

A good guess would be 1227 CLEANED coins all in one place. (I don't think his beef is with ebay....just what somebody did to the items being sold)

It's not that difficult to re-patina Indian Heads if you know what you're doing.

Ahhh. OK. Because I don't see anything wrong with the listing.

At least he's divulged they were cleaned--sometimes they don't.
Of course, what really gets me about IHC lots are vague date spreads.
From the photo, it appears most are 1886 and later, probably many 1900+.

I suspect the seller isn't the one that cleaned them. They are probably all ones he set aside from regular IHCs and now that he has a ton of them is selling them in bulk. It is probably the best way to deal with something like that which still has value, but would be looked down upon by typical collectors.

Like DVCollector said, at least the seller tells you that they are cleaned.

I agree, he's not trying to defraud. A seller can sell at what ever he wants to start. This is where common sense and knowledge come into play.

That looks like a decent auction unlike the ones that don't say anything or "grade yourself"

I think everybody is missing the OP's point. He has no complaint about the auction....Just what somebody did to those Indians.

Nobody likes grimy old copper pennies - nobody. seriously though, after collecting off and on for 40 years, I have and will never understand why eye appeal doesn't increase the value of a coin regardless of the what happens to coin that has a shine on. And on that note.... I am not shy to buy a well struck coin that has been errrrr... that is shiny. It looks great in MY collection and wows the uninitiated. Soo send me all your worthless "ruined" coins, I'll pay freight! . :)

simple- a shiny coin* is a damaged coin, hence the value is hurt

*the one exception is a proof coin with mirrored fields, those are pretty shiny but they are supposed to be like that

Dont get me wrong, I have no issue with ebay nor the seller. Its the 1200+ IHC's that have been cleaned. It hurts me and my dansco. The auction is a bit over priced for common date damaged coins, but most ebay auctions are over priced.

I feel your pain. You know what hurts more? It's when I see a professional IHC dealer selling tooled and retoned "raw" IHCs at problem-free prices. I encountered this at the last coin show--I won't name names, but suffice to say everyone needs to look out.
