Poll Question
First of all, has anybody else heard this ? Of all places I heard this on CSN last night......(I know !, I know!....but they said this was an "announcement from the US Mint) I think this is awesome for several reasons, but what does everyone else think ? High MS grades were more difficult to get without a true "Uncirculated business strike Set" of course.....but then again it DID make the ones that you "could" acquire, worth a little more maybe. This last year of the Satin Finish sets of 2009.....does anybody think there will be a decent premium on these in the future if this proves to be the final one ?

Heard the same thing 2 weeks ago from Mike Musak on HSN. He said no more satin finish. He claims to have had other Mint "scoops". They sell lots of coins. So, I started purchasing 05-09 sets on ebay, worst is you break even, if the rumor is false. No downside at this point in time.

Yeah....... He said the same thing after the 2007 Gold Buffalo.....that "rumor has it...this is the last year of the Buffalo".....just to sell more of them of course. But, different from that, I heard specifically, "The United States Mint has announced__>>>" .........so, I took that as fact. (hopefully not in error !)
I have checked the Mint's website and can find nothing on there about this......but that doesn't really mean much. They aren't really known to keep that website very current and/or including "future information". I think other sources will confirm this fairly soon if it does prove to be true. And I hope it does !

Those sleaze dealers are lying through their teeth, the US Mint has not announced anything of the sort. I guarantee if it were true, it would be in the mainstream numismatic press and not info only available from these shysters. They are just trying to drive their own sales and justify the inflated prices they are charging. Same thing with the 2006 Burnished Eagles, 2007 Buffaloes, and ad nauseum...

I do not think it will effect value on these due to the quantity that was minted. If it does I think it will be far down the road.

The U.S. Mint isn't going to replace Satin Finish coins in Mint Sets with business strikes, for the following reasons:
1: It would make too much sense.
2: Collectors would actually like being able to get high-MS business strike coins during low-mintage recessionary time periods. (see #1 above)
3: The Mint's quality control on business strike coins is too high to include them in the current Mint Sets. (just look at your 2009 Mint Set, if you don't believe me!)

I doubt they will stop the satin finish sets but even if they did stop making them I don't think it would effect the prices of them either way. You can't believe 1% of what those Home infomercial sellers say just as was said above about the Gold Buffalo, they said they weren't going to make any more of them so you better get what they were selling because this may be your last chance, well as we all know not only did they make more, they made them in different denominations the next year but they couldn't tell anyone that because it would have made their sales lower

I would love to see the Satin Finish go away, but the damage is done. We now have five years of a third strike type to taunt us.

I had mixed feeling about starting the SF and now I'll have mixed feeling about them going.
Their introduction was bad for me personally since it detracted from the value of alol mint sets but they nwere a sort of "inprovement" in the coins. I was especially happy to see they also raised their production standards when these were instituted. It also presented an opportunity for young and new collectors to seek out the non-SF and get in on the ground floor of something which ios great for turning newbies into serious collectors and numismatists.
Now that they're going away it will refocus attention on high grade circulation issues like those in the old mint sets and this is good for me. But the move will disappoint some collectors and remove a good source of high grade coins. Presumably the same production improvements from the last few years will remain in effect.
I suppose I'm much more for reverting to the old mint set coins than I am against it. The SF was an interesting experiment but it did raise a lot of objections and will make a lot of business strike coins from the laast five years pretty scarce in nice condition.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

We would need a transcript of the show so we know EXACTLY what was said. For example suppose he said "The Mint has announced the 2009 mint set coins are the last of the satin finish." What does that actually say? Does it say that the 2009 coins WILL be the last satin finish coins that will be made? Or does it say that there have not been any satin finish coins made since the mint set coins? It actually says the latter, in other words they haven't made the 2010 coins yet. The difference is the tense. What I wrote above is present tense. It describes what is true AT THIS MOMENT and makes no prediction about the future. These home shopping people are very good at what they do. Saying one thing and getting people to infer that it means something else. They DON'T imply it, but they get the audience to infer it.

From the show 2 weeks ago, he said "I have the scoop". From an honest person (which I don't know if he is) this would imply he has new, yet to be released, inside info.

I just have the ole' ....... "wait & see" attitude. The 2010 Sets will be on sale soon.....we'll find out then ! .... The snake oil salesmen on HSN ARE very tricky and good at what they do. That guy must be a multi-millionaire MANY times over.....made on the backs of unsuspecting/unaware buyers. Regardless, Condor makes a valid point (as usual) on the actual words used here. I'm sure he carefully chose words that would prove to be "LAWSUIT-PROOF" ! ..... But I still don't discount this as of yet.......I'm just waitin' to see.

The coins for the annual Uncirculated Mint Sets would probably continue to be produced in the dedicated "Uncirculated Coin production areas" of the Philadelphia and Denver Mints, on the lower-speed presses.
However, all they'd have to do is stop burnishing the dies, and voilá the Uncirculated coins would be in "business strike finish" again...
