Another favorite of mine. Also posted on another thread on "rarest coin"
1771 Lima 8 Reales with HIAPSN spelling error (should read HISPAN). Estimated less than 10 specimens outstanding. It amazes me that this error got past Spains quality control system.

Very nice! That is amazing that there are only 10 or so out there. Well, I must admit that I am not that surprised that this comes from the Lima mint since this mint was notorious for errors and underweight coins. In fact, during the 17th century, when Lima was sending out a lot of cobs that ended up in parts of Asia, many merchants in Malaysia refused to accept cob 8's with the Lima mint mark. This actually led some members of the British and Dutch East India Company to ponder whether they could get away with counterstamping the "M" mintmark over the "LM" in order to try to fool the Asian merchants.

I think you are refering to the Potosi Mint which had a big scandal over underweight coins occuring in the 1640's and maybe even earlier. The mayor of Potosi as well as one of the mint assayers and possibly others lost their heads in 1654 after the Royal investigation. After the scandal broke the design on all cobs minted in Lima and Potosi was changed and the King decreed that all the debased cobs be turned in for either melting or devaluation. As a result most of the 4 and 8 reales from Potosi from the 1640's were melted. The King declared all 8 reales minted from 1649 until the start of the new design in 1652 be valued at 7.5 reales and cobs predating 1649 were valued at 6 reales and had to be counterstamped at the mint to show their reduced value. But errors of this magnitude on Pillar dollars are very rare. This had become the coin of the world and the Kings reputation was at stake. I am only aware of 2 others, "EST IND" for "ET IND" on an Mo 1745 Half Real and VRTA for VTRA on the 1768JR Potosi 8 reales. I have never seen the 1745 in person but I have seen the 1768 at a coin show in Long Beach.

I have seen a couple of these. One came from Hing Kong and they had transfered the A and S. So there is a Numismatic forgery of this error out there.

In 1999, there was a group from mainland China that had several interesting errors. One with the wrong King's name was a beautifully executed forgery. The dies were great just mismated. The other error was the Hapsin error but on a coin dated 1758. These were only obvious in person NOT in pictures.
