Found these two last night. First, what happened to the MM on this one?

Second, what happened to the surface of this one?

There was grease in the die on the 79 that prevented the formation of the D. You'll find a lot of them.

The 85 is the Zinc corroding under the copper. You'll find either bubbles like that or what looks likes lines under the copper. I'm guessing by the time they age a hundred years they will have self destructed.

I'm new at this and am sure somebody will correct me if I am wrong.

The 1979-D on the lower serif is a problem with a bad punch. If you check several from that date/mint mark you will find a large percentage of them look that way. The bubbly one is in the area where their was an incorrect rinse before the plating was added on the planchets. Hard to find good examples on some years and something to advoid buying if your wanting a nice variety. They only get worse with time.

Umm, yeah...the 1979D has nothing to do with grease...it's just how the punch came out. They got rid of that punch at the end of 1979 and went to a new one in 1980. They then changed that one for yet another new one in 1983, then again in 1985.
