When I look at photos, I can tell the difference between large and small dates--1970 and others. But one doesn't usually seem to actually be larger than the other. How does one come to be labeled large and the other small?

Everyone has had their say, including me, and reading thru the whole thread, I find one small bit of help that is not mentioned. That it: If the "7" is below the imaginary line drawn across the tops of the 970, then it is LARGE. I use this method, and am right on every coin I have pulled to check. I make this point, because I am legally blind'. It can't get much simpler than that. I see some complaints about coppercoins, posts, and I think they are out of line! I have had as much trouble figurinf out which variety I have in hand, and ask if it is susc, and such, BUT I also make notes to help me remember, so as not to be a big pain!
This is only one of the forums I belong to, and I see a lot of sarcasm directed at Chuck, and others, and without good reason. Like Chuck says, if you just can't gey it thru your head, even with notes, pictures ate, maybe you shouls collect something else. The choice is yours.

I just see it as, if you don't want to mess with answering or get tired of answering the same question over and over again to the same person, then don't. Don't post at all, let someone else handle it.

livingdinasaur,
I appreciate your consideration for Chuck. No doubt that he is an invaluable resource and asset to the forum. However, the criticism about doing your research before asking a question can be pointed at most all of us. You authored on 1/13/10 a question with "Euro dollar : US dollar" asking what the conversion rate was between the two. It appears that you brought your question to the forum to be answered by friends before researching it. I googled "euro to dollar" and received pages of immediate answers to that question. You received 4 or 5 very courteous answers giving both the current rate and where you could locate, on line, calculators for this very purpose. You were not nuked for asking it. That is the point. On an open forum as this, there will be questions and answers that we disagree with. We can either choose to answer or ignore them. There is nothing to be gained from hurt feelings and discourse filled with vitriol.

It may be that the questions about the 1970-S cents could have been posed in a slightly different manor that would elicited answers without frustration. If the author would have asked "there seems to be somethings with the first coin that make me suspicious, any thoughts?" we would have had a interesting analysis about how age and damage can make Iding hard for some. I still find that first coin interesting. I learned from Badthad, I believe, that to him the tail of 7 on the small date seems different and appears shorter than on the large date and this coin seems to have that appearance. I booked marked the topic so as to check back in and see if it was discussed.

It probably took longer to take and load the pics of the coins than it would have to research. Perhaps this was more a question looking for conversation than anything else. It is not hard to smile and be a friend, try it, it feels great.

Here is the problem as I see it- an unwillingness to learn and just be spoon-fed answers instead. These are 12, count 'em 12, posts by the same person on the exact same subject- all related to 1970-S Lincolns. Asking a question two, three, four, even five times before you understand is one thing(and perfectly fine) but a dozen shows a frustrating and disconcerting pattern to me. I understand that numismatics can be a difficult past time and I did not just hop out of the womb with the knowledge I have. The difference is I and many others here have made an effort to assemble a numismatic reference library, read posts on forums like this one, listen to experts in the field and learn from them, and try to absorb as much information as possible. The purpose of this forum is education and I love seeing the light bulb go on for a new collector but education is a two way street, the educator has to make an effort to help you learn but you also have to make an effort to absorb the material and understand it and I just do not see that happening here.

Bio, I am in complete agreement with you regarding the obligation on the student to make the effort to learn. It sounds as though some of us have already become frustrated with the number of posts on the same subject. Knowing this, why would you even open it? If everyone just leaves it alone, the poster would eventually learn that the well can run dry. If you open it knowing that it will inflame you, it would seem you are looking for a reason to become upset. There is simply no reason to be short, rude, terse or caustic with anyone.

Hi All,
The basic reason that I have not posted much recently is because I've seen the same questions over and over again receiving the same answers over and over again.

I still like to respond to something new and I like to respond to Subjects that actually have a question in them.

When I see a question like, 19## S, what do you think? I slip right past it.

When I see a subject like 19## DDO, I sometimes look. If I see a bunch of people that say it is a DDO when it obviously isn't. I cringe and go on. I am too busy right now to get into disputes over what is and what isn't.

When a newbie asks a question, I like to Help.

When the same question is asked over and over by a person that has been here awhile, or I see responses from people that make very little sense (and some of those folks have been around here long enough to have seen the subject thoroughly discussed before) I have to wonder what's up...

I've seen some folks that have learned a great deal give the proper answers to many of the questions so I don't often hop in to say....(Fill in a name) is right. If the right answer is there, I move on.

Folks that have a particular question for me have been emailing me questions so I am still here but not here , at the same time:-)

I've also been buried in working on updates to my own websites.

Anyway...I'm here...sorta....but it is tougher to spend a great deal of time here right now. For those folks that are really learning about these subjects, my hat (if I wore one) is off to you! To those that ask the same thing time and time again (NOT The Newbies, you are all OK) the Search feature here is really excellent and there is likely an encyclopedia's worth of information already here just waiting to be searched for.

Thanks,
Bill
