I had something really strange happen on ebay. I made a best offer on an NGC certified XF-45 1875-S Twenty Cent Piece on ebay on 1-26. I offered $255. My offer was rejected immediately - I assume an automated rejection based on price.

Oh well I thought.

So imagine my surprise when I got an email from ebay - sorry you didn't win - the item sold for $240. $15 less than my bid. No special terms.

What happened?

Hmmm. That's interesting. You should have gotten it! I have no clue.

Odd. Sounds like maybe the seller rejected yours then decided they needed to sell it and took the next offer, even though it was lower than yours. Maybe.

I know I've had offers rejected only to see that they turn around and sell the coin at the same price. Oh well.

I bet that seller is sorry he didn't take your 'best offer'!
He rejected a $255 offer and got $240?!?

You probably should have bid a maximum of $255, in addition to
submitting a 'best offer'. This situation is strange, but the seller
must have really thought that he could get more than $255!

yep, what they said... seller rejected your offer too quickly. When I used to sell "best offer" items, I would wait as long as possible to reject bids, hoping to avoid that exact situation. Messed me up one time when I had 3 items for sale and the top offers each wanted 2... had to reject one of those offers and sell to the number 3 bid. (Hope that made sense.)

There was unfortunately no opportunity to bid as it was a Buy it Now with a Best Offer option.

I think what happened is that the buyer set an automatic rejection on offers below a certain amount. So my $255 offer was rejected. Then, when it didn't sell, they lowered/changed the parameters of the auction and accepted the $240 offer. I did an ebay chat with customer service and this was their explanation. They said once an offer was rejected, the seller couldn't go back to it.

So they lost $15 and I didn't get a really nice coin. This would have filled the last slot in my 7070. Oh well, disappointed but I guess there are other fish in the sea.

Here's the auction:
