The coins are definately out there. The funds can be aquired and they are available even online in real high grades. The funds I would get from the sale of the ones I have now was what was going to be my startup money on my minimum MS-66 Morgan set

Bryan..I don't know if this is an option for you... I was in the same situation as you, however, I went from buying raw to certified (MS 63 -64 range). I never got rid of the raw Morgans that I bought. I could have sold them to fund purchases of a higher grade, but I simply just did not want to get rid of them even though the certified ones looked so much better. The way I look at it, why not have the best of both. It seems that what you have collected so far in reading your posts is a great accomplishment, so why not hold on to them while you upgrade? (Besides, you can never have too many if you ask me!)

I also started out with raw, then went from the raw purchases to MS-64's, the only coins that I have that is under a MS-64 is the coins that I bought raw and submitted to NGC for grading (which I beleive the 1882 Broken O/S TOP 100 which is a AU-58 and a 1891 in MS-63 is the only two coins under MS-64 that I own)I do still have alot of my raw morgans also

If you have a few raw morgans, you could probably sell those off to get some funds for upgrading, if that's what you intend to do. Also bear in mind that for some dates, MS-64 coins are at very reasonable prices, whereas MS-66 or MS-67 coins have sky-high prices, and are rather difficult to track down.

Yes I understand that I could search for years for certain coins and am fully prepared to do so. I know I have only been collecting close to a year but I really dont see me doing anything else that I would enjoy so much, and most of the people I chat with online have been doing so for years on top of years and they also have searched for a long time for specimens at certain grades when they just wouldn't settle for anything less. I know that most MS-64's are reasonable thats why I figured they were the best bang for the buck when I started and I really thought there couldn't be that much difference between a 64 to even a 66 or 67 but like I have said in earlier posts it just blows my mind the difference between the two. Now I find myself buying 3 or 4 MS-64's a month sometimes more sometimes less but the only thing I would really have to change is I would have to save up my money (which would be spent on MS-64's) for the month or even for a couple months and find a MS-66 or higher and purchase it.

The MS64 is the first set of Morgans you collected. My advice, if I were you, is to keep the set. In years to come you'll look back at where you started from and these coins are your earliest history of buying coins. MS64 is great condition! My morgans are lucky to be in fine or very fine condition, but I treasure them. There are a hugh amount to collect to complete the series, so you've done well. If you feel it would be with some regret to sell the set, don't. Once sold, all that hard work is gone forever and all your left with is the cash to start again. You could still collect the higher grade Morgans over time...or you could begin on a different coin series!

It would be nice to hang onto the #1 registry set, but if selling the MS 64 goes a long way to purchasing an ms 67 then I would sell the corresponding coin so as not to upset the date collection.

I want to thank all of you for all of your good advice, Ithink I will do what most of you have said and instead of selling what I have now, just upgrade then liquidate the ones that the upgrades replaced. I know that I would probably regret selling the #1 set if I was to do that , I need 1 more coin in that set to have it 100% complete and if the angels are looking apon me a purchase I made just yesterday on ebay will be that very coin (its raw so it will have to be graded)from what I could tell by the pictures (we all know how that is) it shows the characteristics of this coin I need. Once it is 100% I can really focus on my date/mint mark set once again but it seems this B1 reverse set has consumed me for the past few months. I have seen a few coins that are unattributed but are upgrades to the ones I have in my #1 set once they were attributed so they will probably be my next few purchases (when I get the coin from ebay and if it is indeed the coin I am missing, and I get the upgrades I have already spotted, every coin will be a top pop coin with 5 of the 7 being the finest known to exist from PCGS and NGC combined and they will be a population of 1 of 1). Once thats done I think I will be alot happier and will be able to upgrade all the others I have now. I want to thank all of you again for all the wonderful advice, I knew I was asking the right people

Okey Doke! take a look at the Date/Mint set and see if there is anything there that interests you and when the time comes I will keep you in mind (most of them are very affordable in MS-64 on that page)One someone else is interested in right now and that is the 1878 7/8 TF and the 1878 rev of 79 is at NGC right now getting attributed and it will go to another set, but everything else so far is fair game http://www.collectors-society.com/r...eSetID=14566

If you have the funds, you should do what makes you happy. But remember, the more you spend for each coin, the more you have to gain,or god forbid lose if there were an economic meltdown in your lifetime.

well I hopefully will never have to sell them, either at a gain or loss. I really want to leave them to my youngest daughter (since she has shown the most interest) and I also want a collection she can be proud of

Dangit Bryan, I was happy with my Morgans till you started this thread. Mine were all AU-MS, now I'm selling the AU and buying MS UNC.
