As alot of you know I have quite a few morgans in my collection, most of which are MS-64 condition with only a couple lower than that. I have almost a full date set and about 40% of a date/mintmark set (all in either PCGS or NGC slabs)finished. I have found that since I started collecting my taastes have changed, when I first started MS-64 was wonderful but now I just received my very first MS-67 morgan and I have to tell you I am considering selling off all my MS-64's and starting all over with higher grade morgans. I was just wondering what any of you would do in my position. I have only been collecting about a year (well it will be a year in september)and I am pretty proud of my accomplishments in collecting Morgans but I now feel that I should have taken a little more time and saved up to buy the better grade coins then the MS-64's I could afford each week or a few a week. Please feel free to give me suggestions on what you would do if you were in my place. I also was wondering, if I were to sell all of my MS-64's what would be the best way to do so, ebay,Heritage or Teletrade Edited by Bryan1315 06/10/2006 3:53 pm

I get the feeling from your post that you want to up-grade.
Therefore, you should probably do it.
I wish I had those Morgans!
I was able to save about 20 from college days, and then bought another one a few days ago. They are very nice coins. Wouldn't it be nice if we had something similar today?

Bryan, if were in your shoes, and if it were affordable to me, I believe I would sell the Morgans in order to buy higher grade. As to where to sell, well, I am not educated on that topic to even make such a decision. Good Luck!!

Hi Bryan
If I were to do what your doing, and Iam !! but not with Morgans (Merc's) I would find my replacement for the coin I have now purchase it and then sell the other afterwards.
This helps in two ways it keeps your collection in the same place as it now percentage wise and also helps keep the money directed where it needs to be.
Just my 2 cents worth but it works for me !!

I know it will take alot longer to get the collection together than it has so far but I feel I am in this for the long haul now and I would be alot prouder (if thats even a word) of a higher end collection than I am with the one I have now. I also know that from 64 just to 65 can mean thousands of dollars but I think it would be worth while in the long run even if its just something I leave to the kids after I'm gone. I am not expecting to become a JackLee or anything like that, I just want something that I can look back on and be proud of my accomplishments (we all know the harder you have to work for something the more it means to you)
Edit: metalman, that is a good point and something I have been struggling with, wether to sell the collection and then take the money made to buy better coins, or keep what I have now and upgrade when possible

I would be very proud of what you have now! 1892,93,94,95 in MS64 state,I can only dream of. I have the Morgan Date book filled with AU-MS coins, with just 1893,94,95 missing right now and I thought I was doing good. If you feel you need to upgrade then I guess you should. As far as how to sell, I'm not sure about that either. I have seen filled Peace dollar date books on ebay but never Morgans.

Dont get me wrong, I feel like I have accomplished alot in a short amount of time. In the short time I have been collecting I have accomplished having the #1 registry set for B1 reverse Morgans which having a #1 set of any kind was only a pipe dream when I started. I am ranked #152 on the date/mint mark set with only 40% of the set complete which isn't great but also more than I could have dreamed of a year ago, so I am proud I'm just not satisfied

I guess thats what keeps us all into collecting, getting more or getting better coins. I have always felt a person should never settle for anything less than the best they can afford or even a little more than they can afford. I say, if you can do it, go for it.

If it helps, I would be willing to take those Morgans off your hands (for free of course), so that you may pursue those MS-67's

As long as you're comfortable in the knowledge that you might go months between acquisitions, by all means go for the higher grades. The only important question is, "What appeals to you?"

Im not sure how the registry program works, but I'm thinking that to capitolize on that particular collection it would almost need to be sold as a whole,,
If you know another collector or several of the B-1 Reverse VAMs perhaps the set would sell at a favorable price just among those folks, otherwise a generous portion of the value will be going into the hands of someone else.( to someone who collects and plays the registry to become #1 in one purchase would be worth something !!!)
If this is not possible then I would give it to the best venue to sell ,either heritage or teletrade.
The date ,Mint coins are the ones that I would upgrade as the opportunity presents itself.

well like I said I felt when I started that MS-64 was the biggest bang for the buck, but when I look at this MS-67 and compare I can see the importance of having a high grade set. I am sure some people may laugh at a MS-67 coin and say that isn't a high grade coin but you compare a PCGS MS-67 to a MS-64 and it looks like you drug the 64 behind your car for a couple miles

Well I say this even though I'm new to collecting morgan head dollars (I only have 3) but with my experince of reading books, mags, articles in the forum, I have noticed people have more success by sell all ms-64 coins and buy fewer but more nicer upgraded coins. I would also like to say upgraded sounds like a wrong thing to say I like to think adopting better children(I mean coins not real children I'm only 13 going 14) I dont have any children though so that might sound bad

You have an almost complete set of one of the most sought after US silver dollars in almost perfect condition. Thats amazing. If you want to step up the grades you need to think about some things.
Do you have the funds? Are these coins avalible in a higher grade? Where can you find the coins
I know I'm a very new collector but these are some things even a teenager like me knows. My advice is find the coin first. Sell the old one and make sure the coin you want is avalible to you before you sell the other ones.
And if al else fails you can sell them to me for a good price :) JKJK
