Hello,
Recently my local dealer has seemed "cranky." I called him and asked him for a price and he said, "Prices over the phone? That's not a service we offer. Come down with a list or something." So, I go down with a list and he still would not look up the price for me. He growled at me, "If I spent time looking up prices for everyone who called I'd never get any work done. I know it looks like we are not working but we are." This dealer also is a landlord for properties in the area among other things so I know he is busy.
So, am I being too sensitive? I'm still new at this (16 months, approximately) and I have asked about prices here on CCF and got half of what I was looking for only because the coins I was looking for were not available on the people's Grey Sheets. This is the best dealer in town in my opinion but I'm a little afraid to go back. Any ideas?
Thanks, Rich

It very well may just be timing. I know a few dealers that just took a big bite when gold and silver dropped. In some states they are required to hold all the things they buy for 10 to 14 days. If you live in one of them the guy could of lost a (FEW BUCKS) on the hold.

Hi Rich....sorry to hear about your experience. You might have caught him on a bad day, but it is hard to give prices over the phone for numismatic items due to the subjectivity of grading. So, can you give more specific information on what items you were needing pricing on? Also, were you just asking for prices for your own knowledge, or were you wanting to sell them to the dealer? The biggest coin dealer in this area will do a free 15 or 30 minute appraisal, but beyond that there is a charge. Looking up prices for someone who has no intention to sell is a service, and I see no problem with a dealer charging for this service. However, there is no excuse for him being a jerk either.

Are you being too sensitive?.I would say No..On my worst day I treat people with a little respect and a smile or I go home.I don't deal with Rude people but that's how it works for me.There are too many other avenues to pursue my hobbies and interest.. If you can deal with the rudeness then work with him

Hello CoinHunter53562, Quote: So, can you give more specific information on what items you were needing pricing on?
Also, were you just asking for prices for your own knowledge, or were you wanting to sell them to the dealer? I purchased a 1986 Mt.Rushmore 2 Coin (Half Dollar and Dollar) Commemorative Coin Set and did not record the pricing for my inventory and I wanted to know what the current bid and ask prices are for that set just to fill the hole in my inventory. Thanks, Rich

Hi Rich, The date and sets don't match up. 1986 is Liberty, 1991 is Mt Rushmore. 1986 Liberty set bid $18/ask $20; proof would be $18/$20 also 1991 Mt Rushmore set bid $34/ask $37; proof $36/$39 These are from the Feb 5th Greysheet. My current one is floating around here somewhere, but this should give you a good idea.

CoinHunter53562, Thank you so much that actually helps more than you know. I'm not sure why I said 1986, I think it is because I have the 1986 ASE Proof on my mind. Thanks Again. Rich

So you aren't a customer (buying or selling) just wanting him to look up grey sheet prices on something you bought elsewhere?

RPT,
No, I give him quite a bit of business because he is the only 1 of 3 local dealers that was willing to get me started collecting.

If he is normally helpful and friendly he just might have had an off day. However if he has always been cranky and short with you than I would give someone else my business.

Steve199, Quote: How did the other 2 dealers treat you? One of the dealers was unwilling to help but his store was more of a comic book store and he only had a few coin items. The other coin shop was in a "hoity toity" part of town and all of the "sales associates" were dressed nice, etc. This was a place that made me feel very uncomfortable and treated me like scum because I'm on a budget, sometimes a very tight budget. Rich.....
Rude people would never get "repeat business" from me. It would only take "one time" and he'd lose me as a customer.....he may not care, but neither would I then, from being treated badly. If it's the only real avenue you have, however, then it's worth the "maybe he had a bad day" theory.
(by the way.....I like your Avatar !....I'm going after that Set at the present time actually !)

I agree with most, he may have had a bad day. I think everyone deserves a second chance. However, if this behaviour continues, then you might need to look for other sources. This is why I really enjoy coin shows. When you find a dealer with serious attitude, you just move down to the next table.

I say give Oscar the Grouch the boot! Find a different coin dealer! Failing that, pickup a coin magazine from a Barnes & Nobles or Borders. They have pretty extensive pricing in them. They may not be as accurate or in depth as grey sheets, but they will give you a good idea if the prices you are seeing are accurate.

I have to partially disagree with most on this. When you deal with people all day long it eventually gets to you. And when finally someone wants preferencial treatment such as phone info, I too would probably just said the same as that dealer did. Of course not familiar with how much buisness he does every day but when you deal with people a real lot, you start to really get irritated easily. And too you may have just called when some other person just called and wanted prices on many coins. Or even a series of calls and no sales, only a lot of calls. And remember too that although you may have been a customer in person in the past, that is not easy to know who is who on the phone. Always try putting yourself in the other persons shoes for a while.
