I have seen some extraordinary collections around, and I wonder how people have obtained so many amazing coins! How long has everyone been collecting coins for? Are your collections physically large with thousands of coins, or do you just have a few really nice coins? I am 15 and have been collecting for a year. I am trying to find any US Large Cents, but my budget (for lack of a better word) is really low! Anyways, I was just curious about all of you collectors!

I have been collecting under a year also and I just collect Morgan dollars. I have quite a few when you add up my certified and raw coins but I sure dont have thousands, I may have close to 120 morgans in my collection right now with about 80% being in MS-64 condition, which I just started upgrading to a no less than MS-66 collection except for my B1 reverse ( I will just have to get whats available in these)

DJ ran a poll a few month ago on this question. Here's the link. It seems the results are a fairly broad spread - we've got quite a few "newbies", as well as a reasonable number of "old hands" that've been collecting for decades.

Coins used to be a lot cheaper in the past, especially in times when there wasn't much interest in them. That is when coin values were seriously way too low, and hence, bought cheap. I believe I got mine way too cheap at times.
Right now, thanks to the strong interest in the numismatic field, there are a lot more considerable consideration, but at the same time, adding more "value" to it.

Well, I have just over 900 now, I've been collecting now for atleasdt a year PROPERLY and I am 14, 15 this december. The easiest way to get coins is : a)BUY them! In Piles, Look for something interesting, might be some where you can buy 10 for a dollar. b)Trade them for the bank. For rolls. c)Find relatives that travel alot and they should have a shoe box filled with coins.

I made a mistake, when I stated I had 120 morgans that is just what I myself have collected, I also have boxes full of medicine bottles/coffee jars or anything else that will hold something with probably few thousand coins my grandfather had given me

madhandles761991 - Hey, great question, I myself have only been at it for a few years and I'm surprised myself by some of the collectors even on this forum and how long they have been, "The true collector" for! And think in amassment at what I could have in even ten years, now I'm drooling... Thanks very much LOL.

I started collecting 11 years ago with Lincoln cents. I am filling a Dansco album with nice red BU coins. I am missing all mint marked coins from 09-27 and 3 Phily. cents from the teens so I have a ways to go but it is a great set. I have some circ. sets going as well. I also collect some high end graded coins. I enjoy the raw stuff most. Joe

Just realised I voted in the old thread, but never made a comment, so, here's my story...
Started collecting coins back around 1980; I would have been 8 years old or so at the time. Guess that means, lets see, um, maths isn't my strong point... 26 years? Whoah.
As to your other question, "How many coins?", my database tells me I just recently acquired coin No. 7135. Most of them are cheap "scratchtray" items, coins bought in bulk lots at auctions or coins brought back by frineds/relatives from overseas.

My wife and I inherited a collection from her Father. Also, we got a Naval 1st Day cover collection and a stamp collection. So much to go through. We are organizing it now and trying to cash some of it in due to bills!!

How do you all catalog your coins? Software? or by hand?
