Can anyone tell me from the pic if this is a VAM-18 morgan? The mintmark on the back is the closely spaced type. Looks to me that this has the doubling on the leaves and cotton bolls, but I'm not sure if I am seeing it right or if the light is playing tricks on me. Opinions please!

With out the reverse it is hard to say It could be a VAM-6, 18 or 24. The reverse is a key tell tale.

here's the reverse. Now that I look at it a bit better, looks like a 24. Dang.

Before I will answer, is your coin slabbed by a major third party grading company? The picture suggests your coin may be cleaned which would significantly reduce its overall value.

It is in the top 100 Vams but it is only a R-4 on the rarity scale so not really a premium as an R-4 is by the numbers is listed as tens of thousands. I thick it's an AU coin and in that year the CC mint put out 2,212,000 coins. I do not have that one.

It's not slabbed....and I do not know if it has been cleaned. I should note that I do not own it but am considering buying it. I hadn't even noticed that it might be cleaned.....good point though.

I have found out that the best way to collect anymore with any coin that is more than $25 or so is to make sure they are already slabbed by PCGS or NGC....kinda like buying an antique car - you usually get better bang for the buck if the work is already done.

That's true...I never thought i'd be able to buy a CC morgan, but I can buy a BU 78-CC for under $300..maybe not ms65 but 62-63. I'm a sucker for the 1878-79 coins.

And I saw a 85-CC NGC MS 65 the other day went for abt $600

the 78-CC is on ebay......here's the link:

I just don't know its MS. It is real by the pup's. It is a nice VAM 300.00 sounds a little much as I would have to side with Ozland on this coin has been cleaned. I think the coin is an AU-58

Robert's guide puts the availability at rare. In June of '09, an update on this VAM cut the previous population in half, making this a sought after coin for collectors. You did good, nice job!

I just checked my VAM up-date that LVA completed Jan 21 2010 it shows a Vam-24 and 24a and are now listed as a I-4 in interest and R-5 on Rarity. If you like the coin you did well. If you are looking to get the coin graded use ANACS because even if the coin has been cleaned they will grade it with details and John is there Attributor and as (SOLID OF A GUY AS THE COME)

not sure if I will follow up with it or not.....I have gotten finer tastes as my income has allowed, so I'd rather have a coin that grades w/o problems. Just a personal thing, I guess. Of course, I can always keep looking - just have to find the good stuff before you guys do!

I did find a 79-s B reverse about 4 yrs ago....xf-45, i'd say...got it real cheap. But it's not a CC, if you know what I mean.
