mdj Valued Member United States 136 Posts	Posted 12/30/2011 3:16 pm Well I'm no expert either. But the Red Book says there are "curved, straight, ragged, incomplete, and elliptical clips." The example they show has sharp details right up to the edge of the clip. I know the pics aren't that good but that's the best I can do with my camera. The edge shows the pure copper middle, surrounded by the copper-nickel outer layers. Whether its clipped or post mint damage its the first I've come across. Report this Post to the Staff

I had $150 left to flip through but the edges were all clad. I must say I am very excited since I thought I would never come across this coin but alas, I have grabbed one at face value! I guess the fruit got jealous and needed to give me something to make them dance about! I will post pictures along with more dancing fruit after I finish eating this pizza, down a few beers, and watch the first period of the Sabres game. I found a 1996 W !!!! and it is in about uncirculated condition, great detail and pretty spotless as far as a circulated proof. This is my first west point coin and is now off the list of rare dimes I want to find from the wild. Every 6 months I say to myself "why don't I just pick up a box of dimes, there's something to be found, right" I have made a fool of myself again. Searching dimes is absolutely terrible. I never even get a single coin worth saving. Even if I did, the dates are hard to read, the coins are small to handle, and the series is just boring with having almost no interesting varieties or anything to look for. Including this 1996 W I just found about an hour ago anyways here are the pics of the coins I think you can click on the images to make them bigger and see the 1996 W details 96 W obverse 52 reverse, 64 obverse 96 W reverse, 52 obverse, 64 reverse Awww heck one more time....this box deserves it Report this Post to the Staff

I will likely never find one. 3 silver dimes, which is more than I ever found, are worth what, $6. The whole rest of the box was probably a waste. So you scored 4/2500 or a rate of 0.16% success. Nickels and Cents provide so much more. Actual valuable dates. Myriad varieties. Much higher probability of finding errors. Even War Nickel silver. The dime score you just had would probably be equal in value to the worst nickel or cent box score I've ever had. What's funny is that my dime score is usually zero dollars so I agree, you did well. Just don't get why anybody, including myself, ever searches dimes. Report this Post to the Staff

Also what do you find that is so great in nickels? pre 1960 nickels? If so good luck selling those....what are you going to get $2.10 a roll? There are like 4 jeffersons that carry a premium other then the War Nickels, which might I add have less then half the amount of silver in a silver dime. Unless you are finding a semi key and a silver, or the 50 D, or 66 silver War Nickels per box (good luck selling them because they are harder to get rid of) then you are doing worse on the nickels then I am doing on the dimes. PS if you are selling silver dimes @ 2 dollars send me a PM maybe we can do some business. Thanks Now lets look at pennies. If you are a copper hoarder good for you I guess you can talk but if not a Wheat penny is worth how much? Most of what you will find will be 40s and 50s wheats which you can sell at what tops 10 cents. How many varieties and errors do you find that are that valuable. 1 per box would probably break us about even with my silver dimes. That is if you can find someone who wants to buy your error or variety. Silver is the easiest thing to sell. hesgut Pillar of the Community 1028 Posts	Posted 12/30/2011 10:40 pm I came to the dime thread because I just finished a box of dimes and once again found absolutely nothing. My words may have been harsh, but it is significant for people to see that not everyone has good experiences searching dimes. On your find...at todays silver spot price, silver dimes are worth almost exactly $2. Also, try selling your 1996 W dime. It's not BU and anyone can easily obtain a BU example. You could lie and fool somebody, but if you were truthful and called it an AU, it's value is about $4...so you searched 2500 coins and have 4 total the are worth $10. This also seams to be a well above average score. Looking over this thread, many others indeed find none, or sometimes 1 silver dime. Nickels; I actually find 2-3 War Nickels per box and my record is 7. Some have also been AU War Nickels. I've actually never found a 50-D or 39D, but living close to SF, for some reason there are still XF/AU better date 'S' minted nickels in every box. 46-S, 49-S, 38-S. Those can even be sold by themselves for a bit. I find BU 82PD and 83PD all the time. BU dates from the 50's which can be sold for a bit. I always find some repunched MM, maybe a Cud, occasionally a variety. I don't bother selling any of it, but I don't think I could ever do worse than $10 if I did. btw, your facts were wrong, a War Nickel contains much closer to 3/4 of the silver compared to a pre65 dime, not less than half. So finding 3 War Nickels already is more silver than 2 dimes Cents; yeah there's the whole copper thing, but let's even forget about that. I find 60PD SD, bunches of wheats, many many 60's BU coins. Repunched MM again. There's always varieties. Once again, living by SF, I could usually put several high grade sets of 68-74 S minted cents together and although I don't know why, those sell easily on ebay for stupid premiums. Bottom line is, nickels and cents are just so much more fun. With dimes...other than silver, what is anybody even searching for. Roosies are the most boring series with the least amount of varieties, better dates, and even errors out of any series ever produced by the mint. This opinion is worth reading in this thread and I can post here as I just literally searched a box of dimes and it was horrible again, so my goal is a warn people of the pitfalls. I also search quarters and find one silver per about 3 boxes....I should be shot for having so much wasted time clocked in while searching for coins for my collection.
