I've mentioned in previous threads that I believe someone is searching the clear plastic rolls in my region before they make them available to customers. The idea was shot down pretty quickly. I want to give an update. I've now searched between 20 and 25 boxes of clear plastic wrapped coins. Basically, when I get a box, I look at every roll to see if there is any silver. Then I open the rolls to scan anything that has potential. I still haven't found a single silver that could be seen by looking at the rolls in the plastic wrapper. I've found 4 and they were all darker on the rim and found when searching individual coins.
It's still possible this is just a coincidence but I feel even more confident now that someone is looking through the dime rolls and pulling the obvious silver dimes.

$120 CWR yielded a 1963D and my first Merc from rolls/circulation a 1944D that I put at G6 for the reverse and VG8 for the obverse.

I think you could be correct. I have gotten a few Brinks boxes from one of my banks
now and then. They also come in clear wrappers and I have yet to find a silver.
Most of my luck has came from CWR.

Hi kenscott, Thanks for the reply. I know there are many people who have good luck with brinks clear plastic wrapped coins. I think its important for others to know that we don't think Brinks is setting there going through every box. If they really wanted to do it, they would automate the process, changing their machines to pull silver. But there are several potential opportunities for people to pull silver before the boxed coin reach the bank customer. It would be interesting to see if others in my area (and yours) have similar experiences. I don't know any other dime hunters here in Oklahoma.

I have a friend that works for Garda and makes deliveries and he said there really isn't any opportunity for anyone to really pick out silver unless like management is a whole crew are colluding and breaking a ton of rules. But once they make the delivery there may be opportunities to search and pick at the bank itself.

Williamson, Thanks for the information. I figure all the couriers have policy in place to prevent tampering with money. I also know that there are usually two per brinks and loomis truck (around here). All they need are a few extra dimes and a little time. It may be against rules but I can picture them justifying it.
For the record, I'm not saying it's widespread or that the courier is the responsible party. Just saying it's possibly the courier and probable that someone in my area is pulling silver before the dimes make it to me.

Is it just me or is everyone having problems finding 1969 and 2009p & D. I know these are low mintage years but I am finding them to be almost as elusive as silvers. Last box yielded 2-2009 and 1-1969. Any thoughts? Cory

Guess what guys? I found my first silver dime last night! the icing on the cake? it is a Mercury dime! I've looked through a total of 7 rolls of dimes(on occasion I will get a roll of dimes from work to look through, mostly when we are low on nickels and penny rolls) and I was so shocked to see it plop out. I always open the rolls so I can see all the rims first and I could tell immediatley it was silver. I wasnt expecting it to be a Mercury dime though! its the highest mintage year(1944 p) and it has a bit of wear but I'm in love with it. I keep taking it out to stare at it. my first Mercury dime! |
