thanks rachums! I was so happy to get my first silver dime so soon and it being a Mercury dime no less. I can see why people search dimes, the rush kills finding a War Nickel or Wheat penny rush I get. even now remembering it I've got an ear to ear grin. I cant believe out of all the rolls we had at work I snagged the one that had it in it. its very satisfying to have a Mercury dime in my collection. I figured if I was ever going to own any id have to pay melt for them at the least. finding it in a roll makes it super special to me though.:)

Reading some other older threads on here got me wondering, just how often is it you guys find silver in dimes usually? I see alot of people bashing it saying it's really hard and not worth it but others saying they get about 1 a box or so. I kind of want to jump into dime rolls for a while and focus mostly on them but if its going to be futile most likely I think id rather play it safe and stick with mostly nickels and pennies. thanks guys. this forum has been such a great help to me.

Justin- dime rolls are good for silver. Usually. You will go through dry spells and good boxes but will probably end up in the average with your finds. Many people who say dimes are not worth it have not given it a good try. And others give up really easily. Yes, it takes work to find silver. You would make more money working at a fast food restaurant. But that's why this is a HOBBY and not a Get-Rich-Quick Scheme.
Hope this helps

I dont expect to make anything off my roll hunting. my treasures I find are much too meaningful sentimentaly to get rid of. so no worries there. :) hard work also isn't a problem. its just that with the limited volume I can go through if its going to be months between finds i'd rather stick with my pennies and nickels which while not as exciting are alot more likely to contain keepers like wheat pennies and coppers and pre 1960 for the nickels. I like old coins and the reason I didnt give dimes a very serious try yet is because pre 1965 coins would be much much rarer in dimes as they are silver. what else should I look for in dimes besides post 1980 dimes without mint marks? if you know of a site with a list or something like that a link would be great. thank you for helping this newbie, this coin collecting stuff is addicting.
