As I was doing another evening of penny roll searching, pulling all of the nicest Unc's and a few very close AU's along with Wheat's and the occasional Indian, I had the thought, "What if my parents would have done this many years ago". I would have incredible material to look through. When my parents were young in the 20's and 30's they could have pulled all kinds of wonderful coins for little cost like I am doing today. Then I wondered a bit more about what it would be like if my grandparents had done the same. Now I know that the time frame I am talking about was a time when $.05 would buy a loaf of bread or entry into a movie so it would have been harder to put them aside. I wish now that when I was a kid in the 60's that I had roll searched for the nicest wheat cents. Does anyone else make a habit of keeping all of the nicest current circulating coins? The Lincoln Memorial is now like the wheat back. It isn't coming back.

Are you speaking in terms of investment or just numismatics? Had I started roll searching as a kid I may have run across a few of what would be semi key date coins, but for the most part it would more that likely been common date stuff.
If for potential future monetary gain then I am afraid you would do better pursuing other investment avenues.

But sgent,at that time most folks couldn't afford to put penny's,nickels, dimes and quarters away. Maybe your Grands were rich but most folks in the 30's were not doing so well. That is what gets me, is the fact that I can put in my hand,a quarter, for instance, that some dude maybe paid for his groceries for a day with a silver quarter and maybe a dime and had a feed for the family..

That's how it usually works....you have the time, but no money or money and no time.. My father, (86 years old),has a fine collection of Mercury dimes, Buffalo nickles, and wheat pennies. He started that when he was in his 20's,which would make that around 1945. He said the same thing, when he was a kid in the 1930's the money they had was spent on food, there was not much for saving.

No reason we can't start doing that for our future generations though!

My grandfather had a gas dock and we have just found three oil cans with slits cut in the tops. (No lids to take off! We'll have to cut them open!) They are filled with coins! He also has books of Indians, Wheat's, Barbers, and Buffaloes! I cant wait to search this lot. I have been trying to track it down for five years and just two days ago my brother called me! I will definitely start a thread and share with everyone what I find in his 'from circulation collection.'

It is easy for some to do this, but it is hard to keep them. My father started collecting in the 50's and he just gave me most of his coins. Unfortunately, due to my older siblings and two divorces most of the silver coins and all of his paper money is gone.
