Talking about the reverse of '07. I assume this is a variety and not an error.

I hear a lot of collectors say "bullion is bullion" and they shake their heads at people that buy slabbed ASE's. I guess because they are not "real" coins.

But, if you're going to collect them, wouldn't you want the nicest examples you can afford? And if nice examples, say MS69's, are what you want in your set, I doubt that you can get them for a small percentage over spot (at least, the older ones).

So, what does a new collector do when faced with the opportunity to buy the 2008-W w/'07 reverse? Are collectors ever going to take this coin seriously enough for it to have any value in the future?
And if you are collecting the set, shouldn't you get one now? Mintage figures are estimated at somewhere in the vicinity of 47,000 which it seems like I read somewhere that the 1955 DDO Lincoln was also somewhere around that figure. I could be wrong on that.

I'm not at all comparing this to the 1955 Lincoln DDO other than the fact that I wonder how many people shook their heads when they were $100 and waited for the price to come down.

Sorry if this has been hashed over before, but I didn't really see anything when I searched the forum.

I'm probably gonna get blasted on this one.

I would call the 2008/07 reverse SAE a mule because it combined two different designs not meant to go together. You are correct that the maximum possible mintage was around 47,000 but it could actually be a bit smaller. I believe these were selling for over $600 when they were first discovered and are still around the $400 level for slabbed MS-69s. The estimated mintage essentially makes it the second rarest SAE, right behind the legendary 1995-W proof(mintage 30,125) that currently sells for around $3000. At the very least I think this one will probably hold its value and it does have upwards potential. Even though the SAE series has been around for 25 years now, the coins are minted to such an exacting standard that errors are almost nonexistent and the 07 reverse is the only die variety to be discovered. That alone gives this one a bit of a special aura.

BTW, the estimated mintage of the 1955 Lincoln DDO was 20-25,000 but most of its value is derived from the fact that it is one of the most obvious doubled dies in existence for any series and denomination.

Thanks for the long awaited response. I was starting to just give up on this thread. I never considered the mule option.

I like the ASE series and am only missing a couple from 2000 on to complete the set and had been trying to decide what to do about the 07 reverse. (Although I will probably never own the 1995-W).

Anyway, I agree that it should at least hold it's value and has upside potential. Since I didn't get any feedback to mull over, I have already taken the plunge and bought for under $400. Only time will tell if this was a good move or not.

Thanks for the 55 DDO mintage estimates. I have always wondered about that. I don't think it would have mattered if 10 million were minted, it's just beautiful and will always be sought after.
