Not wanting to be overly cynical but I bet 'The Big One' will involve a higher price to grade coins and some sort of 'shake up' that means previously graded and slabbed coins should really be re-submitted.

Or possibly they slab them straight from the mint so they can churn them out factory style.

Rant over.

I hope it's not the 100 point grading system that some were talking about. And did you notice the prices for grading at the show? Holy cow.

OMG - that would be the ultimate kick in the teeth for those who have used them in the past - surely they wouldn't dare!

I bet they've either figured out a way to 'tag' the coin (microscopic serial number, anyone?) prior to encapsulation or they teamed up with that one company that maps your coin features so it has a unique 'fingerprint'.

I believe that would be counter-productive to the business. They LOVE IT when a coin is graded over and over again.Anything to stop that from happening wouldn't be good for them. I'm thinking the 100 point grading system so that they can get all the coins back eventually that have been graded using the 70 point system.Any thoughts on that?

Makes sense from a regrading point of view - I don't think they would dare distance themselves from the other 2 big companies in that way though. People would just stop using them and use the other 2.

Equally money grabbing - what about if they want to grade each side of the coins from now on? They could pass that off as an improved service and still eventually get all the coins back for a re-grade.

This is something that has been mentioned with all of the grading services. They would all follow suit you can bet.As far as grading both sides, yes.that's a possibility and years ago that was often done.I have seen older coin books that mentioned that being done in the past.

Maybe they will surprise everyone and just offer a cheaper, faster, better service - maybe even offer to use their experts to identify and stop fake sales on ebay to protect the public.

Hang on - what am I thinking - thats not how the world works!

Your right, regrade = more profit. Will be interesting to see how they manage to do it but I bet its the outcome

I'm sure But one can always hope they'll do something for the hobby.. not just for their bottom line... (that's a given).

I sure hope you're right gshift but I think it's just gonna be a shake up for their pockets and not the hobby.

Don't they grade both sides of a coin now? When I buy a slabbed coin that reads MS66 is it only the side showing that's a 66 or is it both sides that are 66? And what about the third side "the edge" does it get graded too?

1. I don't think it is grading both sides of the coin (giving two grades a REV grade and an OBV grade) because that was actually done by a couple TPG's in the early days - so that wouldn't be revolutionary.

2. Giving the coin a unique "fingerprint", etc. That would be revolutionary, but I would think it would only apply to the top 10% of coins - why get that 1921 G4 merc fingerprinted and at what cost?

3. 100 point scale. Well, they went to "half grades" in sports card grading (basically added to the scale) and that was introduced somewhate quietly - so not sure about that.

I think the biggest challenge facing the hobby is counterfeiting, but they already provide that service by slabbing your coin.....

I do agree that it will certainly be something that will make people think about having their slabs re-submitted.

maybe they finally got their grading computer figured out, I know they are the ones who patented it quite a few years ago. I know I know I really doubt this but heck if everyone else is trying to take a guess I might as well also

That would be great, Bryan, maybe like a site where people can take pictures of coins and have PCGS issue a grade with a photo certification seal for a fee.

Also, perhaps I'm being overly optimistic, but I really think this will benefit PCGS and coin collecting in general. PCGS, I'm sure is smart enough to know the downsides of a 100 point grading scale, and that it will not benefit them. I guess we'll have to wait until March 25 to find out what the announcement will be.
