When the new Presidential dollar program started, I went to the bank and purchased 2 rolls of each one as they came out. In reading that the Fed can't get rid of them and that many find their way back to them and the fact that they minted so many, should I bother to keep them? That money that is locked up could get some very nice pieces for my type collection. Does any one keep any quantities?

I would hold on to them South, you might need to search them for your Dansco album if you're collecting the entire program.

Gent,

I did the same thing when they came out. Then I looked at the quantities minted, the lack of interest in Sacs and SBAs and the fact that they look more like a game token the money and I got rid of them. Went thru them and checked for errors and....gone. Personally, I think I am money ahead of the game.

I would say hock it, but also it depends on which president it is. If it's one with possible errors then you can risk opening it, or you can sell it for a premium as a cracker-jack type of novelty. Or... spend them. If you decide to open one and you find a rare variety, you definitely can keep it, but then you have 24 bucks to spend. Either way....

In 2007, when this began, I started out with the same intention.
But, then came to the realization that the rolls aren't going to be any big deal, nor worth much (if any beyond face) in the future most likely.....too many minted....too many in BU condition....and too many people with gobs of rolls of them too.

So....I just decided to get enough "singles" for my folders/albums as I go along....I'll get a roll from my bank and pick the best ones to keep.....spend the rest.

The best BU examples and the Proofs, all in a nice Dansco, will be all you need in the end anyway.

Having one or two rolls of each at the end of the program (even both P & D) won't mean anything except that you have $25.00 face value rolls, that you can either spend, save, pay some bills, or buy other coins with !...
They'll be Epay "spikes" of course, with popular Presidents I'm sure all the way along......but all said and done.....at the end of the program....and 10-20 years after that....I really doubt they'll be worth having !

I did the about same as Eaglefoot.
This past year, after getting on this site and getting motivated. I saw that I had close to $2000
in rolls of State Quarter and Presidential dollars.

I started cracking the rolls, filled some Dansco. Then picked out a few of the better ones, put them in either 2X2's or mixed rolls. This opened up about $1500 to put into other coins I wanted, to help fill the many unfinished Dansco's I have going.

I would spend them. In my opinion the prez dollars are junk. Not dissing the use of dollar coins just don't like seeing more tired and old presidents and the edge lettering is hiddeous.

Me too! I love buying burgers with them, throw in a couple halves and a $2 bill and then see what happens.

I'm with Libertad on this one with these considerations:

- some presidents seem to be more in demand
- a roll might be worth $25 in 10 years...mayyyyyyyyyybe.
- if you have the time and resources, check the ones you have for errors, cash them in, buy more to check for errors.

I've checked about 1000 of those coins and found no errors. There's another member on the forum with a signature line that goes something like, "I just know I'll find it in the next roll."

He's right.

I have been collecting the presidents. The rolls are for the most part horrible. These coins are very hard to find in choice uncirculated. I have had rolls where all of them are spotted, nicked, and discolored. Collecting rolls of these is a waste. Finding better quality coins and saving them is the key to the presidents in my opinion. I believe the high quality coins will be hard to find in the future because the ones left in the rolls will not retain their original mint state very well.

Keep the Lincolns, both Roosevelts, JFK's, and Reagans
(oh wait, none of these business strikes are out yet!)
