After reading SDcoin guys thread, I was interested in purchasing the least expensive gold coins. I have heard of people purchasing some U.S gold coin (don't remember which one) for around $130 (I think it could have been 1/10 oz). To do this, I would save up like 5 months of my coin "budget". What coin would you guys recommend for this?

1/10th oz coins can be very nice additions to your collection. Some prefer the Canadian Maple Leafs, others prefer the American coins. Its impossible to tell you what will be available for how much in 5 months. If you find someone who can do that accurately let me know though, as it will drive my buy/sell decisions! LOL.

I don't know what 1/10 oz GAE sell for now but a few years ago I bought two for pendants for my wife and I for like 60 bucks a piece and I still wear mine every day and have hers in my drawer since she gave it back to me when we split up, so they can be affordable. I guess spot would be abut 100.00 now since gold has risen since that time but if you want US coins this this will probably be the cheapest

This is about as cheap a gold coin as you can get: an 1856 1 Dollar coin, ex-jewelry, pretty beat-up with old solder still on it.

1/10th ounce gold Eagles are going for roughly $130-$140 each right now. That's the cheapest gold US coin I can think of off the top of my head. Premiums are high on these, but so is demand. The price is tied to the spot price, so if you think gold will go down alot youre best off waiting, but then you risk the price going up as well and missing out. Good luck whatever you decide!

I can usually find damaged $1 gold coins for a bit over spot, same with quarter eagles.

im going to the coin shop, finally, today to check things out. as you know I am starting a 7070 and looking to fill some holes on the gold page. I might sacrifice quality for quantity, however. knowing that whatever gold coin I get will have a premium, I would like to at least shoot for VF with the gold coins so that would leave me a chance to acquire as many as possible for that page. again, gold is gold and weather there is a numismatic/intrinsic value on it, its always gold and even if it is worn a little, I'm willing to make a sacrifice. either way, its going to fun and I will have something nice to look at.

Do your homework and shop around. Most of the times the small fractional 1/10th will have a huge premium over a 1oz. Consider foreign gold too, usually its cheaper than American. Sometimes small denomination foreign circulating gold coins (not bullion) are cheaper to buy.
P.S. carefull in buying those Maximillian marriage tokens.

I suggest you save for twice as long and then buy a 2 1/2 dollar gold piece, either a Liberty (Coronet) Head or an Indian Head. In the long run I think you will be happier with a true numismatic collectible than with a modern bullion piece.
