I've been doing a lot of reading on large cent coppers. I've turned my attention to the later dates. My question is: The last two types are called the Matron and Braided large cents. Do both coins fall under the Coronet type coin? I've read literature that mentions that both coins fall under the title of Coronet, but then I read where the Matron coins are also referred to Coronet, but not the braided. Can anyone clarify this for me? Thanks.

I think RedBook lists them as Matron Head up to 1835, 1836 has it's own "Head of 36" and then Young Head from 1837 -1857. However the same later design on a Half Cent is referred to as a "coronet head". And if that doesn't confuse you there is also petite head, silly head, booby head, mature head and a whole lot more. Personally I just refer to them as "large cents".

Yes, the more I read, both styles (Matron and Braided) fall under the name Coronet.

Yes all of the head styles from 1816 to 1857 can be called coronet heads because theall have the bust wearing a coronet with the word LIBERTY on it. But there are so many changes to the bust, and the early years are so different that the very broad Coronet is subdivided in the the still broad Matron head (middle dates) and the Braided hair (late dates) Even so there are half a dozen different head types in the middle dates and two in the late dates. 1839 is a transition year with five different head designs, four of them being Matron heads and one die being a braided hair. Then to add further confusion all of the pre-1836 matrons are open collar coins, while the 1836 to 39 matrons and all of the braided hair cents are close collar steam press coinage. Even then it isn't enough. If you really look at the styling you will see that the Matrons of the teens are different from those of the twenties, which are different from those of the early thirties, or mid to late thirties.

Try this:
Matron: 1816-35
Young Head Type of 1835-9
1839: Type of 1836 (Plain Hair Cord commonly but erroneously called "1839/6")
Head of 1838 already discussed
Silly Head
Booby Head
Type of 1839 N-8 only-1843: the Petite Head
1843-57 (type of 1844)

Braided Hair is a commonly-used term for 1840-57, as is 'Coronet'
